    Any sucess dying vinyl ?

    Hi,
    Does anyone had good results with spray or liquid dye or paint on vinyl panels and on rear seats ? Red over black or black over red ;

    I'm trying to see if I can make a quick interior from left over parts (1/2 red from a Targa and 1/2 black from a coupe interior) To do a quick resto for a driver car...

    Thanks
    JD

    Try SEM products - http://www.sem.ws/. Just returned from Porsche Parade in Savannah and they were recommended by John Paterek for that precise purpose.

    If you're handy with a spray gun it's not hard, the surface prep is tedious and must be perfect though. Any oils, fingerprints, etc. must be removed; most upholstery shops use PreCleano followed by whatever cleaning solvent the manufacturer supplies for their paint. PreCleano is a great all around cleaning solvent BTW, like Goof-Off on steroids. It'll actually remove dried overspray without harming upholstery. You should be able to find Parasol Varikote or PPG vinyl dye/paint at bodyshop suppliers, they'll even mix custom colors. Alternatively, check with an upholstery shop, it might be reasonable enough to job out.

    The rattle can products aren't bad... I've done panels to match using both Varikote and Mar-Hyde vinyl paints. Coverage was excellent. All of these products contain solvents that literally bond color to vinyl. If the surface isn't perfectly cleaned though, flaking can occur.

    Good luck!

    I used SEM to take a seat and some door edge trim from tan to black with fine results. Four years later they still look good. Easy too.
