    Preservation Award

Finally received the Preservation Award with my name engraved on it. Since 1996, I am the only woman to win that award alone ... with much help from friends. I have much to ponder and so much to be thankful for.

Later, I will post photographs, the names, and the cars though not all are early 911s. Now, I am curious about the history of this award and the previous winners.

    Bouncing Tach Needle

Ahhhh! The car was at a local cruise night ... tonight. On the way home, the tach needle began to bounce around. Once the engine was up to temperature it settled down. I read the threads about it on the registry and will need to have it checked out. But, I have a trip planned this weekend. Can I safely drive the 911, maybe 400 miles, with a bouncey tach needle? Thinking ... it would be wiser to just leave it at home and drive my Prius ... but not as much fun. Darn it ... I was looking forward to driving the car on one last trip before the weather changes.

    Thanks,

The Tachometer and the Points and the Dwell

It takes me forever to get anything done on the 911. Since I don't know much about the mechanicals of the car, I have to research everything. It took three weeks to get this done. It is important to me to understand what is going on.

Clean the points if it still has "points".

Why wouldn't the car have points?

The car does have points, they were cleaned, and the dwell was checked. Even though the work was done at a shop, I still needed to know what is going on. There are several online video clips on this that were watched over and over. Now I know what the points look like, where the dwell is, and have a limited understanding of what is happening. The points should be cleaned on a regular basis. I don't remember ever having that done.

In addition, the oil was changed and a battery tender installed. The window washer fluid motor (Not sure what it is called.) was not working, and inspected. That needs to be changed. After, I check on that, it will be changed in the spring. That needs to be an original part, from Porsche ... if that exists.

The air filter was replaced. I don't know why, but, an extra air filter is always in the car. Last spring before driving to Parade, new air filters were ordered from the local Porsche dealer. I had the wrong one ... the square one rather than the round one. When the parts were ordered, the dealer was given the VIN and a photograph of the engine. What is so difficult about obtaining the correct parts? Parts have been returned many time to both Porsche and Stoddard.

It is proving to be a challenge to keep the S as original as possible. I don't want to and can't cut corners on this car. I maintain it the best I can. My family, friends, and coworkers think I am crazy for doing all this. They just don't get it.

This Saturday will be sunny and 50+ ... perfect day for a day trip to an art show in central Indiana.

    Just love driving the 911!

A Summer to Remember, Harley Hogs

Labor Day weekend the 115th anniversary of Harley Davidson was celebrated in Milwaukee. Tens of thousands of hogs were everywhere. The dudes were all decked out in Harley leather with chicks on the back with long braids and headbands.

On the way home from Road America, I was fortunate to observe some precision driving. I pulled up next to ten Harleys in a two by five array. Of course, they noticed me and I decided to keep up with them.

The "leader of the pack" was on the left and consistently one wheel ahead of his partner. As they approached slower moving traffic, the leader raised his left hand straight up signaling a move. Everyone raised their arms acknowledging the instruction. Then, the leader motioned a move left. And again, all arms repeated the motion followed by a unison switch of lanes. After the last bike passed the traffic, everything was repeated for a move right. It was all timed perfectly. They drove in faultless formation. The bikers repeated it three times.

As we approached the junction for the Chicago/Indiana split, I speeded up and gave the leader a thumbs up. Soon, ten arms were in the air returning the compliment. Grinning, I waved goodbye.

While this was going on, no one passed us. What were the drivers behind us thinking?

    Great fun!

    Some great stories here, Candyce

The ride in the cradle with the scooters made me laugh.

We were just trying to pick up a hot Porsche chick...... didn't work.

You were just too fast for us

A Summer to Remember, 2013 Porsche Parade at Traverse City

What can I say about the Porsche Parade? When this journey started in 2010, I had a 1973 Porsche 911S with over 30 years of memories. The words Porsche Parade, preservation, and concours were not part of my vocabulary. When the registration for St. Charles was submitted in March of 2010, the S had not even been started. What was I thinking? How did this journey begin? Why? The magic of Porsche karma? I don't know. But, it has been an unbelievable, incredible three years. New doors are swinging open for Sepia and me to drive through.

When I think of Traverse City, the names, faces and words of the people pop into my mind first; then, images of the cars on the golf course; finally, the trophies. There would be no awards without the extraordinary people that stepped into my life. Their simple acts of kindness were powerful and changed the direction of my life. My husband's spirit lives on because of them. Thank you!

How did I do it? Jim left me a highly original 911 in exceptional condition. Very little needed to be done. I know this car's history, I first saw Sepia in 1975. Knowing my limitations, I read, listened, attended workshops, asked questions, and learned. But, for all that, I still don't know what things are called. Fortunately, I met the right people at the right time and their advice was exceptional and right on. I just kept picking away at the details ... improving the S little by little. Of course, I wanted to win something. But also, I wanted to show the car and share my story especially with the ladies. Hopefully, someone can learn from my experience.

What's next? All the mechanicals will be inspected via a pre-purchase inspection. Looking forward, there is a need to know what needs to be replaced, etc. Being the steward of this car, I need to be proactive about maintenance and budget for it.

I look forward to showing and driving the 911 ... more cruise nights, drives, car shows, and concours. A dream is to see the odometer turn 100,000 miles and to take a cross-country trip. Possibly, writing another article detailing the last two years.

Where will this journey with Sepia take me?
