    Legends of the Autobahn, 2011

Heard about this show last year, so decided to forego the Concorso this year. (German cars, after all . . .)

So --- before anybody yanks this thread --- here's some requisite Porsche content . . .

    From Friday, 19-Aug . . .

Seen in the parking lot of the Rancho Canada Country Club next door . . .

    Non-running

Apparently, some participants needed assistance to take to the field . . .

    Nice truck. Merle Haggard, anyone?

    More Truck

Serious execution . . . of metal, plastic, paint, upholstery.

(Compare this to Kenworth, Peterbilt, White Freightliner, etc.)

    Did I say nice truck?

    356s . . .

    . . . including just about the tightest Speedie I've seen in a long, long time . . .

Shut-lines, gaps --- everything. Even side-spears you can hurt yourself with. (Getting all those flimsy pieces of aluminum trim to line-up, like that . . .)

    M3 Sport Evolution . . .

    . . . aka Evolution III. Better known as the Evo . . .

Run-out model, 1990. Catalyst 238 hp 2.5 liter, dog-leg CR Getrag 265, 16" wheels, 3-position adjustable front splitter, ditto rear wing extension, hood-seal and grill gaskets, M-cloth Recaro SRDs, suede steering wheel. Side-markers are Euro-standard. Red or black only, always LHD. 600 units.

Vehicle was imported from Venezuela on a DoT/EPA 'display' exemption --- no airbag, door beams, MPH instruments, door chimes, etc. 2500 miles/year. (This one already has ~62k km.) 'Exempts' at 25.

Light-wipers are kinda high-spec (everything was optional --- sunroofs, electric windows, etc.), and looks to have a replacement exhaust. (21-years-old.) Very fresh plate.

Not the fastest car in a straight line, but . . . throw-in some corners, cambers, bumps, a little traffic? Even in weedy-190-HP-US-spec (owned 2 --- over 150k mi, altogether) . . . car is just a terror. Wind up to 7000, then turn loose . . . . The Atomic Horsefly.

    Slower traffic keep right . . .

Are the rear windows on the MBZ transporter glass? I can't imagine how much it must cost to bend those. And how many they must break before getting a good one. Then they need two to match each other...

The 300SL racecar is way cool too. For a second I thought it was just a normal street gullwing, not the racer. Did it have any race history listed?

Yeah, I think I almost infarcted when I first saw this thing. W194 300SL. Like one of the Carrera Panamerica-type racers --- Gullwing's daddy. Not sure how many were built but, if this thing isn't a replicant/tribute/clone --- puny exhaust --- then it's probably too valuable to be sitting on a lawn. And did you check out the ramps?

As for the truck? Gotta be real. (Or ONE HELL of a RECREATION --- even for this neighborhood.) Judging by the waviness if the rear transparencies? . . . I'm guessing plexiglass.

Amazing . . . and no ropes or guards.
