    Correct muffler for early 911

Size: 122.7 KBI just recently bought a 1971 911T Targa and it came with a dansk SS muffler on it with a short chrome tip. PO tried painting it grey and did a poor job I have removed all the paint and would like to repaint with correct color and add a longer chrome tip. What is correct paint and color? Also I had a chrome tip from a previous Targa I owned part# 901.111.245.01 the opening on this is too small to fit over tail pipe. The only # I can find on the Dansk muffler is 92.210 1508. Thanks for your help.

    Mike,

Not sure this is your car and muffler but the following link from pelican has an image of the type of muffler that you have on your car with what appears to be a short chrome tip. The car also seems rather similar to your car in that it's a bahia red Targa. If your car came from NC then you may ask the previous owner if it was ever rear ended.

Yes, the dansk muffler tip is too big for the stock muffler tip diameter, BUT, it can be made to fit by doing a "pie-cut" on the end of the exhaust tube, and then squeezing down the tube. Then just rubber hammer on your original tip! It's been done all the time with my reproduction exhaust tips by a LOT of people.

    regards,
    Eric

Thanks for the response. How many pieces of pie do I need to cut? Also what is the paint ( light gray) that is used and can it be done on a stainless steel muffler?

Start by making 4 cuts, quartering the pipe. Measure your correct tip so that you don't make the cuts too "long". I've heard of guys doing it with a thin dremel cutter... hacksaw (lots of work...), etc. You're really only trying to get rid of a few mm of metal to be able to squeeze the diameter of the exhaust pipe about 2 to 3 mm smaller. No clue on the paint... not my area of expertise, try a search? Somebody has to have done that before.

Once you have fitted the correct muffler tip (or before you fit it), use some flat black high temp paint on the inside of the muffler tip on the pipe that you quartered. You won't be able to see the work you did on the pipe.

Used the VHt SP104 Grey on mine, looks very nice. If you do a search you'll see many others have used it too.

It's holding up well, painted it last winter and it still looks new now, after a few thousand miles of driving.

    Thumbs up

Before I 'Jet-Hot'ed' mine I used VHT-104 for years as well......

    For best results:
    - Bead blast the muffler
    - Hang from STRONG wire
    - Spray multiple coats letting each set up
    - Let last heavy coat set
    - Carefully mount without marring new finish
    - Get the engine up to temp...

    - Have a beer and admire your job.......

Probably a good idea... but no, I did not Mike.
The bead blasting gave it plenty of 'tooth'
