Dash pad police: was there ever an "RS" dash pad with no speaker opening?

I keep running across factory dashes for sale that have no perforations and no speaker grille opening. I used one in my '72 hot rod, and generally prefer them for the look. But I have heard conflicting stories. One, from a respected shop, that these dashes are 1976 one year only. The other opinion, from a *controversial* parts seller that these were also used on RS cars.

In researching threads here, I came across a picture from Konradsheim's book that seems to show a speaker grille dash, but the car photographed also has 'comfort seats' so not sure it's really an RS.

Here is one of those speaker less dashes in the '72 I sold last year.

my understanding that in 1973 for ALL cars the dash with the speaker was the only dash available - RS or T
I have heard of the speakerless dash and I understood it to be a later dash but i cannot confirm whether it was one year only or not or if that year was 1976 - however that is consistent with what i have heard in the past.

surprisingly maybe but a significant number of RS's did have the normal seats - the sports seat was not a popular option back in the day - even on RS's and interestingly none of the sales department cars had sports seats from a quick glance at the build specs

I've had one of these speakerless dashes in my car since 1990.

When I re-did my car in '90 I needed to replace my original dash and found that NOS factory replacements were few and very expensive. If I remember they were over $1150 in '90. I don't believe they had 're-tooled' at that point and were just going through the very last of the original inventory. My other factory replacement options were a plain dash with no grill or holes, or a dash with perforations, either for about $680. I went for the plain dash.

As far as if the plain dash was offered as a one year option I don't know.

I have never heard or seen a special option RS speakless dash........

    Hope this helps...

    Cheers

I have never seen a speakerless dash on a 1973 RS either. It has to have been a replacement dash.

I believe if you look at the mounting screws, the speakerless dash studs don't line up perfectly with the holes in the sheetmetal. That would make it a late dash. gled

Thanks. This would mean the speaker less dash was manufactured some time after the last run of RS cars, then, if the '74/75 RSs also did not have it.

Thanks. I know when I installed one of these in my '72 that I had to enlarge the two mounting holes on the gauge 'arch.' But all the other studs seemed to line up perfectly.

I had one as a replacement dashtop in my '71 911E Targa - as far as I remember they were an option (available in either vinyl or leather) on '74-'76 models.
