Dash pad police: was there ever an "RS" dash pad with no speaker opening?

I keep running across factory dashes for sale that have no perforations and no speaker grille opening. I used one in my '72 hot rod, and generally prefer them for the look. But I have heard conflicting stories. One, from a respected shop, that these dashes are 1976 one year only. The other opinion, from a *controversial* parts seller that these were also used on RS cars.

In researching threads here, I came across a picture from Konradsheim's book that seems to show a speaker grille dash, but the car photographed also has 'comfort seats' so not sure it's really an RS.

Here is one of those speaker less dashes in the '72 I sold last year.
