Thread: Mounting left and right rear bumper?

Mounting left and right rear bumper?

    Hi

I am mounting the left and right rear bumpers. The odd thing is that on both sides the bent 90 degree bracket comming down from the engine room sits a bit high compared to the mounting bracket/eye on the inside of the bumpers. I am tempted to bent the 90 degree pipes a bit, because I can not see that I have done anything wrong. The bumpers line up perfectly with the chassis and the turnsignals. Please look at the pictures, comments?

    John,

The rear bumpers take a lot of fitting, I found slight angle differences in my left and right, have you tried swapping them?

Did the rear bumpers line up before you disassembled the car? I ended up putting a L and R stamp on mine for the reassembly.

I found that with mine I had to make sure that the mounting bolts were loose so that I could move the rear bumper around, and line it up, so that you can get a nice line both with the wheel arch.

I'd try everything before bending them, as there is a lot you can do to make them fit.

O.K. It looks like you have your rear license panel on your roof?

The only way that I got the fitment to line up for me was to assemble it all up together that way you can make sure you have a nice line where the bumper meets your over riders.

You have very little adjustment on the over riders, so I started there and worked out from that point. Each bumper has about an inch of movement, to help you line it up.

I would start by trying to swap the bars over first, and see if they are any closer.

I don't have a parts manual in front of me at the moment but from memory the bolt that secures the brace to the bumper isn't very big so allows a fair bit of movement also.

Looking closer at your first phot I can see that you have fitted the new rubbers between the body and bumper, that will throw that alignment out a fair bit, maybe half an inch.

Undo the two bolts that hold the bumper to the longitudinal. After you check if the other support bar is any closer to lining up I'd put a bolt through it and leave it loose, and then have someone push up on the bumper, making sure not to bent it, and insert the two main bolts and move it around to get a nice line with the arch and rear over rider.

    I hope that helps?

John, in addition to the other good advice, I believe that the tubular brace you're trying to line up bolts up into the longitudinal, so you might be able to adjust up or down up by adjustment of the nut in the engine bay.

John, agreeing with Classic above, i find the easiest way is to assemble all pieces together, and then fit as one (with a helping hand !)

Thanks for all the advice. I will loosen up the nuts inside the engine compartment holding the bent mounting pipes, and mount all the parts loose before tightening up.

Looks good, they were hand built! If you look at some of the old footage of the Porsche assembly line, you will always see someone with a wood drift and BFH.
