Former IMSA racer killed in air race:

Just heard the news that Jimmy Leeward was just killed along with many spectators at an air race in Reno. He crashed his P-51 near the grandstands. Jimmy first drove in IMSA in 1984 at Sebring, renting a seat in my RSR. He later bought a March prototype and drove it a few times. I'll never forget when he asked about renting my RSR and his answer to my question about whether he had ever driven a race car. He replied that he hadn't but had gone over 400 mph ten feet from the ground. That was enough for me and he was in. Really sad and still can't believe it. I spent time with him several years ago when he flew his P-51 to Dallas for some repairs to it. He was unbelievably experienced and had raced for many years and flown in movies, etc. The crash was definitely something mechanical.

Oh my effing God! I know Jimmy..... Great guy and fantastic pilot. tragic loss for the family and aviation. First I heard of this.

God I just saw the video. Horrible.... The families of those lost in the stands - my heart hurts for them and the Leewards.
