The battle-scarred Lennep/Marko 917 was such a treat, there could have been an interesting counterpoint
had this been parked next to it. A few random shots...

Somebody please tell me - is that two 908 engines bolted together???

It has a central power take off, like the 12 cylinder version. It just has two cylinders added on to each end. This engine in 7.2 liter form made around 850 horsepower and weighed about 750 pounds. Donohue drove a car with one and said the handling was terrible. Too long and heavy. The turbo 12 was already flashing more than 1000 horsepower on the dyno so the engineers quickly realized that it was best to concentrate on working out the turbo system for drivability (lag, blow-off valves, etc) rather than the 16 cylinder naturally aspirated engine. Donohue said however, that "if needed" the 16 cylinder would probably have been good for 2000 horsepower in turbo form, with the 917.30's 5.4 liter turbo 12 putting out nearly 1500 horsepower in qualifying trim and a reliable 1000.

This is what I liked most about RRFOUR but since I missed most of the parties the cars were a good distraction...
