    re 1968 911 S??

from what I know there were no 911 s models brought to the u.s. in 1968 instead the 911L was available here but on some websites I see there are some 911s vin numbers listed as 911s u.s coupes...this one is from simons 911 sc site

    911 S Coupé US 118 3 0001 118 3 0473
    911 S Coupé US Karmann 118 3 5001 118 3 5742
    911 S Targa 118 5 0001 118 5 0442

my question is was there a few 1968 911S cars built for the u.s. market?or maybe Canada?

    Response by member Eric:

Bringing an ROW car into the US wasn't very difficult in 1968, or 1969. There were very little in the way of actual requirements at place of import (crossing the border). Since the dealer couldn't bring the cars in officially, the way of entry was through an "individual entry". The requirements were essentially: lights (US sealed beam type), seatbelts, speedometer. Side markers were not necessary, nor were headrests, or door beams. You needed to have a 4 way warning light as I recall. You also needed a dual diagonal braking system. Other USA dealer delivery mandated items were not needed such as collapsible steering column, safety door locks, covered dash knob switches.

Simon's site (like many others) is very inaccurate.
11830001 to 11830473 is a regular (normal) 911 Coupé that could have come to USA
11835001 to 11835742 is a regular (normal) 911 Karmann built Coupé that could have come to USA
11850001 to 11850442 is a 911S Targa but not for the USA

The COA doesn't state where the car was delivered, the kardex does.

FYI, I checked both my 1960 356 and my 1973 99S Targa with Porsche at Rennsport last weekend. For those of you who missed it, they had a laptop and a nice German man that would look them up for you. No pictures, and he did cover the original owner information. On the 356, the image he showed me was a PDF of the kardex and it did contain one warranty note and the importer/dealer/first owner info. On the 73, all he had was a PDF of what must have been some sort of print out of production records. These listings contained the same data that we receive on the COA. He explained that through out the 70's this is all they have. It is easy to see how mistakes are made: the kardex contains some handwritten info and may be hard to read, the later data base is a tightly printed stream of data- easy to lose your place!

In my cases, everything matched and I was able to confirm original owner on the 356--one I told him who I thought is was, he uncovered the kardex image completely.

Not only can the COA be wrong, but in some cases the info used to prepare the COA is wrong. You cannot fully rely upon a COA to have all the facts correct. Many of the websites have bad information. Some of Porsche's own documents have errors and omissions. IF you are preparing to spend some big bucks, THEN you need to do some real research and ask the experts. Take a look at all the fake RS & RSR out there! Even some of the factory museum cars are not what they seem to be. It is difficult if not impossible to make a snap decision and have it turn out well.
