Thread: Spyders at Rennsport 4

    Spyders at Rennsport 4

One of the groups of Porsche I wanted to see at RR4 were the Spyders. I had never seen a real 550 or any 718 so I was glad to see several RSKs. The 550s were not racing, however. I went into the big tent and found several nice examples of the Spyder lineage, some with that beautiful unpainted, hand-worked Aluminum skin. I noticed one of the 718s (RS61?) looked special as it had an oil cooler scoop along the driver side rocker. I also noticed when reviewing the photos that one 550 Spyder had a sort of flattened nose like a 910 almost. The other example (with the Blaupunkt livery) had the traditional rounded nose that Beck replicates. Was that a 550A and the pointed nose one a normal 550? Were they both 550 RS Spyders, but one was a 550A RS?

Can anyone share their knowledge of these wonderful cars with me?

How's about you buy it and send it to me here in SLO? (wink)

My copy of Excellence was Expected (where that is from) is at home, and I think I might even have that book pictured.

I was asking about these particular cars at Rennsport since I did not get to see them with an information board next to them.

I know about the RSK and Mickey Mouse and such technical developments, but I have forgotten what a pointy nose 550 means. I see the rear fenders on it are also smoother and lower than the 550A. I thought that the early Spyders like Hans Hermann's coupe had taller rear fenders.

I guess my real questions are:

    Is #32 the Grossmutter?

What model is the pointy-nose 550? It has the gills so I guess it is actually a later model.

Thanks. Those RSKs had long lives and morphed into several different forms when the rules changed (RS61) for example.

Still curious about the pointier nose on the 550.

550s were ladder frames with swing axles and the 550As had tubular space frames with low pivot swing axles like Mercedes SLRs but I think they shared the same exterior bodies. The pointy nose looks like a privateer modification.

    Just making conversation here.

Not sure what you mean by pointier. There ware RS550s, 550As, RSKs and some variants like this Pooper

Can you describe more what you mean??

Hi, what I mean is that this particular 550 Spyder has a flattened nose, almost like a 906 or 910 but not that extreme. The rest of the 550s have a rounder nose.

Can you see that the spyder in the top photo has a parabolic shape to the nose in side view, while the bottom spyder has a more constant radius. The top spyder reminds me of this:

The top Spyder also does not have such a prominent transition between the door and rear fenders, and has the louvered door there.

Thank you for any and all insights.
