    Question for the RS experts

Anybody know how many of the 2.7 RSs got the limited slip diff at the factory? What were the applicable homologation requirements? Why did people order them? Doesn't seem like an obviously desirable option, at least in a Touring spec car.

I think there were about 402 with the Limited Slip option.

What is not to be desired about a LSD - better braking and traction sounds good to me? Not strictly necessary maybe, but help polish the diamond.

Couldn't agree more with this. I had an LSD added to my car when the mechanicals were rebuilt/restored. Seemed like a no-brainer. I'm a bit surprised more of them were not ordered originally.

Well, coming at this from the perspective of a long time racer I certainly understand the benefit of LSD for track or rally/hillclimb use. It prevents loss of acceleration on corner exit caused by wheelspin (doesn't do a thing for braking, BTW). But on the street? Adds weight, cost, eventual maintenance. What I was really getting at it is whether people intentionally ordered LSD with sporting purposes in mind, or whether the factory just pushed them to meet a homologation requirement. Also, does anyone know whether there were option "bundles" or was it all a la carte?

Mine has LSD. It't not on the Kardex, and not in 'THE BOOK'....so it must've been put in by Herr Ruf....

I have LSD in my S. What is the recommended maintenance for them and is it normal to hear the gears locking up when working it hard?

You won't hear any LSD gear noise just the clutch plates slipping and barking at you, mostly sharp turn at slow speed. On 69 to about 76 coarse spline diffs all you can do is change the trans oil. On most I rebuild of this vintage,I find broken outer undulated pressure plates. I update them along with the inner lamina of a groved design to help with noise. The locking value can be adjusted to your taste along with the pre-load. The pre-load can be checked but you need some base line value to compare too. Gled
