correct dry cell battery for a '68

    All,

is there a correct size dry cell battery for SWB cars available? I currently have a 'wal mart' installed and would like it to be the correct size for the tray. Preferably a dry cell to prevent leaks. I checked Oddyssey, but it does not look like they offer anything that size. I believe it is pretty narrow for a car battery.

Here is a link to my research on that very subject.

The Sonnenschein is available. It is VERY expensive. Worth every dime.

Thank you for that link - fantastic info, but the Sonnenschein seems to be NLA again... and not a dry cell?

Does the miata battery suggestion work??

Did you call Fort Lauderdale battery? I don't think it's NLA.

The Miata battery, and virtually every other modern AGM battery, will be too small for the original clamshells. This looks funny when it's installed.

A great idea would be a "cloaking device" whereby a modern Hawker PC680 is installed inside an old tar-top which fits in the clamshells.

I created a tie down for the Miata battery out of spare hardware. This is what happens when you think about something for a long time and then, in a fit of impatience, decide to fabricate something with the least amount of effort using whatever is laying around.

    miata is 7.5 x 5 x 7.3
    = 190.5 x 127 x 185mm (LWH)

    261 x 135 x 230 is the sonnenschein

so that is is 71mm (2.8") short, 8mm (.31") narrow and 45 (1.77) too short vertically

the good news is it ways a lot less! (27 vs 41 pounds!) But SWBs can use more weight up front!

No affiliation, but as a flyer you might try contacting Larry Jackson at 'Rustcity'. He is a bonafide battery geek and has (had) some surplus Sonnenschein A512/55A at significantly less than $100 each (January 2011 less than $200 total shipped for 3). Each were tested on a carbon pile tester before shipping. He is at rustcity@yahoo.com. Not an endorsement, nor a recommendation, but he is a good guy and IMHO worth contacting.
    Cheers - Hank
