    Auction Description:

    - A very early production U.S.-specification 1968 911 “Soft-Window” Targa completed 17 August 1967
    - Retains matching-numbers engine and gearbox
    - Refinished in its factory-correct Ossi Blue over black
    - Accompanied by copy of Kardex, correct spare wheel, and jack and tools

This nice example, complete with matching-numbers engine and gearbox, is the 10th of 268 Soft-Window Targas built for the United States market in 1968. According to a copy of its factory Kardex on file, it was completed on 17 August 1967 and shipped to Porsche Cars Pacific in the Bay Area, then sold to a Mr. Paul Galvez of San Francisco. A base 130-brake horsepower 911 with a five-speed manual transmission, it is finished in 6803 Ossi Blue over black leatherette with Houndstooth seating inserts. The floors are covered in charcoal carpeting. The handsome interior is highlighted by a brushed-aluminum strip across the dashboard and a stitched, leather-wrapped steering wheel. Options included headrests on both seats, padded bumper guards, and chromed ventilated wheels with hubcaps.

This car’s early history post-delivery is unknown, but is has been resprayed in its original color. At the time of cataloguing, its odometer displayed 1124 miles, indicating it had been reset after restoration; its total mileage is unknown. An enticing early example, this Soft-Window Targa is accompanied by a correct spare tire and wheel, a jack, and original tool set.

The story of one of the first 911s ...

The original baptismal certificate / Kardex from Porsche is available and confirms that this 911 from December 1965 is a "Werskwagen". Even categorized as a "Versuch wagen" - ie an internal test car.

This 911 can be described as a kind of holy grail among Porsche connoisseurs, as it, with full documentation from Porsche, testifies to the test phase of the creation of the generation of 911s that are characterized by having a Weber carburetor rather than the previous Solex carburetors.

The car's design relevance has not become less interesting over the years. The line in the design and the silhouette lives on to this day on new 911 items that roll out of the Porsche plant. Continuously as the 911 was intended by Ferdinand Porsche from the outset.

This 911 has one of the hugely desirable chassis numbers from the 300 series, indicating that it is among the earliest 911s ever produced by Porsche KG in Zuffenhausen (now Porsche AG). The car is documented by Porsche Classic in Zuffenhausen in 1999 on chassis number and production date December 8, 1965. Porsche Certificate of Authenticity with information that the car's first owner was Porsche KG (before it became Porsche AG) confirms this.

The car was, by Porsche itself, after the test phase, sold to a Porsche dealer in California, where it lived until 1999.

In 1999, the car sailed out with Madison Maersk and was later transhipped to Sally Maersk to finally arrive in Copenhagen in May 1999. In March 2001, it was registered in Denmark for the first time. From here, it drove in original condition around the streets and alleys of Copenhagen, for the next many years. The then owner decides to do something good for his Series 300 daily driver and a thorough renovation work will begin in 2015. The car will be separated for each screw and subsequently built by an established Porsche conservator according to original regulations.

Apart from the fact that this 911 is among the first to be produced, there is a completely unique and special detail in the engine compartment behind it. Here is a Weber carburetor instead of the normal Solex 40PI carburetor, which was normally found in these cars from this year. This is because in 1963 Ferdinand Porsche asked the Italian carburetor manufacturer Weber to produce a carburetor that he could use as a basis for a racing version.

The first application for exactly this Weber design was found in the 6-cylinder Porsche 901/20 racing engine. In total, about 100 units of Porsche's 904 Carrera GTS race cars were equipped with this engine and carburetor setup from 1964-1966.

During the production of the general 911s at the Zuffenhausen, this exact car was lifted off the assembly line and fitted with the same Weber carburetor, as a Porsche KG prototype. From February 1966, Porsche officially went from Solex to Weber, i.a. on the basis of great success with this particular car - and this setup with a Weber 40IDA3C carburetor (triple choke) remained in the engine compartment until 1972, when the first early digital age faded.

The car here is a piece of 911s cultural history and will probably not be worth less with time. And by the way, it runs absolutely fantastic.

    BaT Description:

This 1965 Porsche 911 coupe is powered by a numbers-matching 2.4L flat-six paired with a five-speed manual transaxle and is finished in Bali Blue over tan upholstery. The car was built on August 9, 1965, and it was purchased by the current owner out of Illinois in 2010 and imported to Canada. It subsequently underwent a multi-year refurbishment that was completed in 2013. Features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, teak wood interior trim, a Becker Europa radio, Zenith carburetors, and a Dansk stainless-steel muffler and heat exchangers. A May 2021 service included a brake fluid flush, an oil change, and the installation of a new battery. This 911 is now offered on dealer consignment in Canada with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, refurbishment photos and records, and Alberta registration.

Originally finished in Togo Brown (6411), the car was sent to Original Restorations of Courtenay, British Columbia, for bodywork and a repaint in its current Bali Blue before it was reassembled by Concept 1 of Calgary, Alberta. Features include Hella headlights and foglights, four-screw horn grilles, a collapsible antenna, chrome lower rocker trim, gold rear badging, and chrome bumperettes.

This is a re-list after the vehicle previously sold on BaT in August 2021 and the winning bidder failed to follow through with their commitment to purchase. This was not due to any fault with the vehicle. The winner has been banned from future participation on BaT and their buyer’s fee was not refunded.

The 15″ ventilated steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A matching spare wheel is fitted in the front trunk. The suspension features Bilstein rear dampers, and braking is handled by discs at all four corners. A brake fluid flush was performed in May 2021.

Delivered from the factory with black leatherette upholstery, the seats were retrimmed in tan during the refurbishment and are complemented by matching door panels and carpets. Equipment includes teak wood trim, a Becker Europa radio, lap belts, and a rubber floor mat. The factory Webasto heater has been removed.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames VDO green-letter instrumentation including a 150-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, auxiliary gauges, and a clock. The five-digit odometer shows under 20k miles, 500 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The flat-six features twin Zenith carburetors and was rebuilt and enlarged to 2.4-liters by Alpine Autowerks of Calgary, Alberta, in February 2011. A new battery was installed and an oil change was performed in May 2021. An oil leak is noted from the timing chain housing covers.

Engine stamping *901958* matches the engine number listed on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Transaxle stamping 101860 also matches the CoA and can be viewed in the gallery. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Type 901 five-speed manual transaxle. A Dansk stainless-steel muffler and heat exchangers were fitted during the refurbishment.

The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity displays a completion date of August 9, 1965, and lists the factory colors, equipment, and powertrain numbers. A collection of photos taken before and during the refurbishment can be seen in the gallery along with records from the work.

    Auction Description:

This particular Porsche 911 is one of the early, short-wheelbase cars of the type much favoured by the historic rallying fraternity, a situation that has led to original examples such as this one becoming a great rarity. It belongs to the '0-Programme' series built from the start of production in August 1964 up to the introduction of the longer-wheelbase 'A-Programme' model in August 1967, and thus represents the Porsche 911 in its earliest and purest form.

According to the accompanying documentation issued by Porsche Italia, this car was built for the 1965 model year (1st August 1964 to 31st July 1965) with an invoice date of 16th December 1965. The specified colour scheme was Polo Red (colour code 6602) with a brown vinyl interior, while the only other factory option listed was Webasto heating. The country of first registration was Italy, in the province of Macerata in the Marche region, and the car has remained in Italy ever since. The Certification of Origin, again issued by Porsche Italia, confirms engine number '903335' was the original (it is still fitted to the car).

The current owner, an avid classic car enthusiast with a small stable of cars, purchased the Porsche in 2004, initially to race it, which he did. But then he decided that a 911 from 1965 was far too valuable to race and commissioned respected Porsche specialists Pentacar of Colico near Milan to carry out a no-expense-spared restoration, commencing in March 2017. The body was stripped back to bare metal, repaired where necessary and professionally repainted to a very high standard in the original colour of Polo Red. The interior was restored at the same time, as of course were the mechanicals and the original matching-numbers engine. The result is described as excellent in all respects, and since the restoration's completion in May 2020 the car has been driven only a little over 1,200 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. As icing on the cake, the owner purchased a new tool kit and jack from Porsche Classic to complete the picture. The car is offered with the Italian libretto and Certificato di Proprietà as well as ASI Targa Oro certification. An original, Italian-delivered Porsche 911 from 1965, with matching engine and colour, this is a car for the true Porsche connoisseur.
