    Auction Description:

We are pleased to present this 1968 Porsche 911 Karmann Coupe finished in Polo Red over a highly original black leatherette interior. Originally delivered through Continental Motors Inc. of Hinsdale Illinois, this 1968 example remained under the care of its original owner up until 2016 at 63k miles when it was purchased by its second and current owner. It has since undergone a complete split-case engine rebuild at the hands of a reputable air-cooled specialist with approximately 2k miles driven since. Currently showing just over 65k original miles on the odometer, this well-sorted and thoroughly documented short wheelbase 911 is now being offered for auction by its seller in Washington accompanied by extensive records, the original owner’s manual and stamped delivery book, the original wheels, a complete original toolkit, date-stamped spare tire, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

This 911 is presented in its original color of Polo Red and the paint is said to be in very good condition throughout with some mild patina and signs of road-going wear. The car is suspected to have been refinished at some point during its life and the Karmann bodywork is said to be in excellent shape, free of any signs of rust or repair. Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery. Period aftermarket Lucas headlights are installed and this 911 rides on genuine 15”x 6.5” Fuchs wheels dressed in brand-new Michelin tires. The original set of date-coded ventilated steel chrome wheels will also accompany the sale.

Inside, the black leatherette interior is said to have been kept in fantastic highly original condition. New front trunk carpeting has been installed and the seat cushions have been restuffed, however, all other original pieces are said to have been retained including the headliner, dashboard, door pockets, wood-rimmed steering wheel, headrests, and Blaupunkt radio. The seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional at this time.

This early 911 is equipped with its original 2.0 L carbureted flat-six engine paired with a number’s matching 5-speed 901 gearbox. In November of 2016 at 64,281 miles, a complete split-case engine rebuild is said to have been carried out at European Auto House during which time the engine bay was fully detailed and repainted before the engine was reinstalled with new SSI heat exchangers and an MSD ignition system. A new fuel tank was installed at 64,900 miles and the carburetors are said to have been tuned in 2020 by renowned Porsche expert Jack Morris. There have been 5 oil changes recorded since the engine rebuild and this 911 is said to be accompanied by a large box of records dating back to the original purchase. The seller reports this example to be startup promptly, shift smoothly, and run strong while free of any outstanding maintenance items.

This sale will include 1 key set, the original owner’s manual and stamped delivery book, a complete original toolkit, the original spare tire, jack, and wheels, a box of records, a Porsche COA, an assortment of original engine parts, the original’s owners personalized keychain, and a clean title. If you are in search of an early short wheelbase 911, this remarkable 65k-mile 1968 example is certainly worth consideration.

It seems Frank Beck has the matching engine case for this car.

Any idea why the CoA mentions this as a "1967 911S Coupe"? It seems to be a 67 Normal?

I cannot make sence of the data tag as it has no "S" after 911. But the COA states it as a "S".

I discussed this with Dave, we assume an error in the CoA

    Auction Description:

    A Carolina “barn-find” expertly revitalized in 2017
    Numbers-matching engine and gearbox
Complete bare-metal lacquer re-paint; original interior
Fastidiously preserved using all its original parts
Accompanied by Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, spare, jack and tool roll, and restoration invoices

This example is among the first 100 in that group, known as the “O” series. Completed 14 January 1966, it was painted Polo Red (6602) and trimmed in Black leatherette—then, as now, a popular combination. A tinted windshield and rear glass were the only options requested by its first owner, a resident of Dothan, Alabama.

When the car was three years old, it was sold to an Eastern Airlines pilot from Fayetteville, North Carolina, and in 1980 it passed into the hands of Leonard Cummings of Marion, North Carolina. Eventually Mr. Cummings relocated to suburban Charlotte and around 1990 the car, still in very original condition and bearing a 1989 registration, was parked in a shed near Gastonia.

Acquired by the current owners in 2016 after nearly three decades of storage, the Porsche was taken to their shop, given fresh gas and an oil change—and promptly fired right up. Surface concerns prompted them to give the 911 a bare-metal lacquer repaint (though no evidence of prior body damage was found); it was completely disassembled and then thoroughly rebuilt using all its original parts, aside from new seals around the windshield and rear glass.

The interior was found to be in near-perfect original condition and was left as-is. It is not believed that the engine has ever been apart; even the paint on the air cleaner can is excellent. The original transmission received some new synchronizers. Further original components include all five wheels, still in excellent, unrestored condition, as well as factory lead weights in the front bumpers.

After restoration, the car was presented at the Atlanta Concours in October 2017 and won its class. The plan was to trailer the Porsche back to North Carolina with several other cars that were being shown, but when a customer’s 550 Spyder developed mechanical issues on the road, the 911 was offloaded to make room for the Spyder. Without skipping a beat, it enjoyed a fast and trouble-free drive back to the Carolinas.

With its beautiful repaint and all-original interior, this outstanding, numbers-matching two-liter 911 presents wonderfully throughout. It is supplied with a correct spare, jack, and tool roll, along with invoices relating to its recommissioning. It is ready to provide its next fortunate owner many more hours of driving enjoyment.

    Auction Description:

    - An extremely desirable early 911, delivered new in the United States
    - Attractive and rare factory-correct color scheme of Irish Green over Beige
    - Powered by its numbers-matching engine
    - Benefits from a complete restoration and meticulous mechanical sorting

This 911 was completed on 9 December 1965 in Irish Green with Beige Leatherette interior with an optional Webasto heater. It was originally sold to Joseph Thomas of New York and remained on the East Coast until it was sold to a long-term California owner in the 1980s. When this California owner decided to sell the car in 2013, it was in solid running and driving condition, though had been painted copper and fitted with a black interior.

The previous owner decided to return this 911 to its original specifications and commenced a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration. The body was stripped down to bare metal and properly finished, and then repainted back to its factory-correct color of Irish Green. The numbers-matching, date-coded engine was completely rebuilt, including its Solex carburetors, and was fitted with new pistons. Even the car’s Webasto heater was rebuilt to factory specifications. NOS parts were used when possible, with no component said to have escaped scrutiny or redress. The previous owner made the tasteful decision to retrim the interior in its factory-correct Beige color, now rendered in leather in place of the original vinyl leatherette material.

While under the consignor’s care, this early 911 has benefitted from further sorting completed by noted specialists at Parkhaus1 of Miami, Florida. In April 2019, the car was treated to a complete addressal of its electrical systems, including a new battery and an alternator rebuild. The hood was also treated to a paint correction regimen and ceramic coating at this time. In May 2020, this 911 returned to Parkhaus1 for a new upper valve cover gasket, servicing to its ignition system, and a carburetor rebuild with requisite adjustments and timing rendered upon reassembly. Included in the sale is a Certificate of Authenticity that confirms the car’s original color combination and powertrain stampings.
