    BaT Description:

This 1968 Porsche 911 coupe was sold new to a US serviceman in Frankfurt, Germany and was subsequently imported to Reno, Nevada. The second owner purchased the car in 1977 and drove it for ten years before placing it in garage storage, where it reportedly remained until the selling dealer’s acquisition in August 2019. Finished in Blutorange over a black leatherette interior, the car is powered by a numbers-matching 2.0L flat-six paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Factory features include a sunroof, tinted glass, front seat headrests, and chrome 15″ wheels. A mechanical refresh performed by the selling dealer included an engine-out reseal, rebuilding the carburetors, cleaning and sealing the fuel tank, and reinstalling the engine with a new clutch kit. This SWB 911 is now offered by the selling dealer with a copy of the Kardex, the factory maintenance booklet, a tool kit, previous registration cards, and a clean Texas title.

The body is finished in Blood Orange (6809), and the selling dealer believes that an exterior repaint was performed in the mid-1970s. Features include a sunroof, tinted glass, chrome “sugar scoop” headlamps rings, front fog lamps, and gold lettering on the engine cover. Factory 15” ventilated chrome wheels are stamped with 10/67 date codes and wear hubcaps featuring the Porsche crest. The Michelin radial tires are stamped with pre-2000 date codes and are thought to be from the 1970s. The four-wheel disc brakes and other chassis components are shown up close in the photo gallery.

The interior is trimmed in black leatherette with matching carpets and door panels and a white headliner. Amenities include front seat headrests, black seat belts, and a Pioneer AM/FM cassette stereo. The selling dealer notes a crack and a wave in the center of the dash pad in front of the speaker grille. VDO instrumentation consists of a 150-mph speedometer, a central 8k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level and engine temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 71k miles, a handful of which have been added by the selling dealer since the recent servicing.

The 2.0L 901/14 flat-six features an aluminum alloy engine case and was factory rated at 130 horsepower. The engine was removed after the selling dealer’s acquisition for a refurbishment that included new gaskets and seals, rebuilt carburetors, and a new Sachs clutch kit. A concurrent fuel system refresh included removal of the fuel tank for cleaning and coating, cleaning of the fuel lines, and replacing hoses and lines where necessary. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 902/1 five-speed manual transaxle. Additional underside photos are provided in the gallery.

The provided Kardex copy shows factory colors and options as well as the engine and transmission numbers. Serial number 11830260 and engine number 3280408 match the stampings on the car.

    Dealer Description:

    • The first 911 Targa
    • Chassis number 1
    • Former test vehicle from Porsche
    • Very well documented history
    • 2001-2003 extensively restored in Germany
    • With the last owner for 19 years
    • Numerous differences to the series production model

Here we offer a unique piece of history: the very first Porsche 911 Targa – ancestor of a legendary series and eponym of an entire vehicle category.

In 1962, the Porsche began thinking about the future of the new 911 convertible. After a long period of development and various ideas, they decided on the version with a fixed roll bar and removable roof. In September 1965, Porsche presented the first “Targa” at the IAA in Frankfurt. The name “Targa” was perfectly chosen. On the one hand, it means shield in Italian – which perfectly matches the safety aspect of the new type of targa bar and roof. On the other hand, the name also reminded of Porsche’s successes at the Targa Florio races. Today the term stands for a whole class of vehicles, as several other manufacturers adopted the design principle and also started building vehicles with targa roofs.

Porsche started a new number range for the new Targa model, starting with 500001 – exactly this car, making it the real number 1.

We asked Jochen Bader, an absolute expert for the early Porsche 911 models, to assess the car. He was head of the Porsche Classic workshop for many years and as such responsible for the factory restorations at Porsche. He is one of the most experienced specialists in the evaluation of Porsche automobiles and is on assignment by numerous collectors worldwide to examine the originality and condition of special classics of the Porsche brand.

Together we have found many special details on the vehicle that differ from the later series production and show the prototype status.

On the one hand, there are numerous small details on the vehicle which are otherwise only found on 911 coupés up to mid-1965 and which, in combination with the Targa body, are therefore something very special. Among others, these are the wood trim on the dashboard, the simple knee pad and the non-adjustable strut domes. As series production only started in 1967, these early details are not to be found on Targas from the series production.

Because of the many 1965 details Jochen Bader and we are sure that this car offered by us was built in mid 1965. The exact date of construction is not known, because Porsche only documented the date of delivery and not the date of completion back then.

There is also a report that the following chassis number 500 002 was used for test drives by developer Helmut Bott in September 1965, which also shows that our car was built before that date.

Apart from the 1965 details, this car also differs from the later production cars in some details specific to the Targa, such as

    – the Targa bar has no air vents
    – the “Soft-Window” is constructed differently and has a wooden bow
    – the Targa roof is not foldable

According to the Porsche delivery confirmation, the car was used by Porsche as test vehicle and was not sold until July 13, 1967. Interestingly, the buyer was the Volkswagen company in Wolfsburg. On the Kardex there is also a record of a service executed in 1969 by the Porsche dealer Müller. This is probably the dealer Petermax Müller located in Hanover, a one-hour drive away. The further history is very well documented by the old registration document and a list from the Federal Office for Motor Vehicles.

The car always remained in the same region within Northern Germany. After the car was deregistered in 1979, the penultimate owner put it into store. 22 years later, in 2001, he sold the car as a restoration project to the current owner. The current owner documented the condition of the car with numerous photos at the time of purchase and collection. Immediately after the purchase, he had the car restored by a renowned German restoration company specialized in Porsche. The restoration lasted from February 2001 to May 2003 and is very well documented with pictures and invoices.

This car is a very important piece of Porsche history and we are happy to be able to offer you this rare specimen.

RIIIIGHT.... what a load of horse dung - this one deserves its own thread.

Too bad they welded in a 1980s rear slam panel and LWB B pillar. That and all the other 142 or so questionable details.

    Addendum
Please note this Porsche is indeed a 911, as described in the posted description, and as corroborated by the engine type listed on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. It should be noted, however, that the very same COA very likely contains a typographical error in referring to the car as a 911S, as it is most certainly a 911.

Produced for the 1967 model year, this 911 2.0 was destined for Portugal completed by the factory in April of 1967. Finished in Light Ivory (6604), the interior was trimmed in black leather with the desirable pepita fabric inserts. Exceptionally well optioned from the factory, the car was outfitted with a sunroof, Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, seat belts, chrome wheels, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel.

First registered in Portugal in May of 1967, the car has remained there since new, passing through four owners. Acquired by its current custodian in 2003, it was sent to SportClasse, a Porsche specialist in Lisbon, where it was fully restored. The restoration began in 2017 and was completed earlier this year. Importantly, it is presented today in its original colours, retains its original engine, and still sports its correct dials with green font, and aluminum dashboard.

Having been in production for well over fifty years, Porsche’s 911 is a true automotive icon and the cars produced in the 1960s are amongst the most cherished. Freshly restored, this stunning example would be the cornerstone of any great Porsche collection.

    Auction Description:

    - Desirable, early 300-chassis-number car
    - Restored in its original Signal Red over Black; retains its original engine and gearbox
    - Original handbook and service log retained

This delightful example was among those in the first full year of production—denoted by the 300 chassis number—and left the factory in March 1965 finished in Signal Red with a Black leather interior. The only options fitted were Dunlop 165/15 tyres. The 703rd example, it was destined for the Sonauto dealership in Paris, where it was registered a month later.

It went back to the dealership for a service in 1967 and from then remained in France. In 2015 owner Pascal Danguin carried out an extensive restoration, sourcing the correct period parts from Porsche specialists across Europe. Today the car is in perfect condition and comes with a history file containing recent invoices, a certificate of authenticity, its original service record, and an owner’s manual.
