    911 Vehicle Weight

Interesting figures form a recent vehicle weigh-in done locally, here in SoCal . . .

2359 . . . . . 1970 914-6 GT, 3/4 tank gas (100 ltr), fiberglass front and rear deck lids and bumpers, metal GT flares, no spare
2376 . . . . . 1970 911T, 5/8 tank gas, Spare tire in place. No radio, vent blower motor, rear seats. Small Lightweight Odyssey battery.
    2436 . . . . . 1971 911T, 1/2 tank gas, Spare tire in place
2452 . . . . . 1973 911T RS clone, 1/2 tank gas, Spare tire in place, Fiberglass Duck tail, Front and Rear bumpers, Roll Bar, L/W seats, RS Carpet, No rear seats
    2464.5 . . . . 1973 911T, 3/4 tank gas, Spare tire in place
    2473 . . . . . 1970 911S, 1/4 tank gas, fiberglass duck tail, Spare tire in place
    2483.5 . . . . 1970 911T, 3/4 tank gas, Spare tire in place
    2489 . . . . . 1970 911E, Full tank gas, Spare tire in place
    2493.5 . . . . 1971 911T, 1/2 tank gas, Spare tire in place
    2509 . . . . . 1966 911, 1/2 tank gas, Spare tire in place
    2524 . . . . . 1970 911T, 1/2 tank gas, Spare tire in place
2559 . . . . . 1969 911 RS clone, 1/2 Fuel (SC tank), Spare tire in place. Fiberglass front and rear bumpers
    2652.5 . . . . 1970 911T Targa, 1/2 tank gas, Spare tire in place
    2885.5 . . . . 1984 Carrera Cpe, 5/8 tank gas, Spare tire in place
    3227.5 . . . . 3.8 BMW CSL Grp 2 Clone, 1/2 tank gas
    3376.5 . . . . 1989 964, 3/4 tank gas, Spare tire in place
    3435.5 . . . . 2004 Carrera 40th Anniv, 1/2 tank gas, Spare in place

Note the differing amounts of fuel. I'm figuring gasoline at 6.2lbs/gal, so you can go back and twiggle these numbers for a better comparison . . . but you get the idea.

Some of the things that stand out for me . . .

    1) 914s aren't that light!

    2) Older doesn't necessarily denote Lighter

    3) Compare these figures to Porsche's homologated weights with the FIA . . .

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...vehicle+weight

    4) A 964 is how much heavier than an Early 911?

    Wow.

I don't have my Owner's Manual handy but the published weight figures I've seen on-line quote 2390 lbs/1085 kg for a '70. I weighed my car on a commercial truck scale, locally --- 2360 lbs/1070kg.

Curious what kinds of actual measured weights people have for their cars.

    2000 lbs

    I would love to build a replica narrow-body (pre-S/T) factory-style light-weight.

I'd have to forgo all the thin-gauge stampings the factory used but here's what I would do . .

    1) Start with a clean T-car, no sunroof

    2) On the interior, remove carpets+floor mats, door-panels, head-liner, front and back seats, glove box door --- install Scheel-type seats/rails, factory-style roll-hoop, perlon-type roof-liner. Leave the glass . . . for now

    3) Strip trunk . . . full spare, jack, tool-roll only --- tower-brace, maybe

    4) Leave sound mat in the engine compartment . . . for now

    5) Strip undercoating except in the wheel wells and front edge of the floor pan

    6) Delete all exterior trim . . . decos, lettering, fog-light covers, hood badge, bumper guards, reflectors --- everything. Leave the holes

    7) Delete front and rear release mechanisms --- replace with rubber pull-downs

    8) Replace engine cover+rear valance-license panel with factory aluminum panels

    9) Replace hood, front fenders, front and rear bumpers with fiberglass panels

    10) Strip exterior paint, remove filler from rocker seam, then re-finish in non-metallic single stage

    11) Paint black strips across both bumpers

Still has its window winders, door seals, pop-outs, etc. And heat-exchangers --- heat + de-frost

But still . . . Two thousand pounds?

My car is a little over 2000 pounds. It was 2008 with a 1/2 tank of fuel but then we switched to some better looking and more supportive RSR shell seat replicas which someone made to withstand an ICBM attack. So its a little more than that now. We also changed the suspension bushings over to the Rebel Racing bits so might have saved some weight there but probably a wash.

You're one of the few people here who actually point up their vehicle's weight --- 910 kg = 2006 lbs --- what kinda stuff did you do to knock-down your poundage?

    Rick

    PS 2008 lbs = 911 kg

I thought it was too freaky coincidental to have it 911kg so I changed it. Guess I should have picked 917kg.

My car is sort of a ringer here since it is basically a track car registered for the street. No interior (except seats). No heater or other stuff like that. Lexan windows except front screen. Fiberglass everything. Hood, fenders, rear quarter panels, doors, ducktail, rear bumper, front bumper. Magnesium type 911 transaxle, Magnesium engine case.

It does have a bolt-in cage and 16 inch Fuchs (7s and 8s) to add back some weight. The MFI is a little heavier than carbs.

I had my car weighed at the local sanitation department's truck scale. With spare tire and 1/4 tank of gas the car weighed 2,225 lbs. The car has Scheels, Performance Superlite wheels, K&N filters with rain hats, no trunk trim or carpets, no torsion bar or headlight covers, and no undercoating. This seems light to me and I will have the car weighed again.

Data point: 'Curb Weight' is what the factory uses. It equals the weight of the car with all fluids topped off, including fuel. When the factory was determining performance numbers (i.e., 0-100KPH, etc.) they loaded the car with a full tank of fuel and 1/2 its maximum permissible load-carrying capacity.

    Hmm.

Is removing the heater a standard race car deal?

From the pics, it looks like The Tart still carries some air ducting and a blower. (?)
