    9113301169 . . .

    . . . now on Hemming's . . .

    '. . . Seller’s Description:
    1973 Porsche 911S
, In 1973 the Porsche factory had a special program known as “Sonderwunch” (Special Wishes) that afforded a privateer racer the opportunity to have the factory modify a stock 911S for competition, and to do it to the exact specification that he wanted.. That's precisely what Mr. Enno Bonomelli did in 1973, ordering only the absolute best competition upgrades, elevating the purchase price of this car from $18,000 in stock form to over $29,000.

Mr. Bonomelli was no stranger to Porsche, racing his own 911 all over Europe in the late 1960's and early 1970's. He also shared a Porsche 910 at Osterreichring in 1971 finishing fifth overall. The list of factory modifications is extensive (Provided upon request) and included significant upgrades to all mechanical systems. The body was modified as well, most notably with RS flares. Currently the car sports a 2.7 Liter engine with horsepower rated at 285.

In 2007 the car was restored to factory new condition by a highly respected Porsche specialist shop in Italy. Cost of the restoration was over $170,000. Finished in Gulf Blue, this gorgeous car is ready for the track as a potent competition car, or for the street as perhaps the ultimate 911 outlaw. Price is firm at $295,000

    * Extensive list of factory performance options

Porsche has always been willing to build cars to customer's individual preferences; the only limit being the size of the customer's checkbook. Those orders are directed to the factory's Sonderwünsch, or "Special Wishes" department, and there, a newly-constructed tub will be delivered with a list of whatever items the buyer has in mind, from "mild to wild".

Eugenio "Enno" Bonomelli was no stranger to Porsche; he was a frequent entrant in the European Hillclimb Championship during the late 1960s and early 1970s in his 911S Coupe. He also shared a Porsche 910 at the 1971 Österreichring 1000km, placing fifth overall and first in class with Vincenzo Cazzago, and later on would do well with an RSR in the European GT chase.

In early 1973, Bonomelli ordered a new Porsche 911S coupe from Viscardo Automobili of Bologna on behalf of the Scuderia Centro Sud racing team. Bonomelli intended to race this car in the FIA's Group 3, and the Sonderwünsch took up the task. This was an expensive exercise; a few years ago, a Southern California dealer who offered this car noted that the base price of a new, base 1973 911S coupe delivered to Bologna was just over 9.7 million Lira, about US$18,000 at the 1973 exchange rate. The delivered price of Enno's race-modified car was an astonishing 15.8 million Lira, or about US$29,000, including factory race prep and pre-delivery testing. This was more costly than a new factory-built Group 4 911 Carrera RSR 2.8.

While 911 330 1169 is currently painted Gulf Blue, its original color was Light Ivory, with the interior trimmed in lightweight black vinyl. The factory-issued Certificate of Authenticity lists the original 2.4 liter Type 911/53 engine case as number *663 0892*, with Type 915/02 five-speed transaxle number 732 5985. Other Group 3 components included a limited-slip differential and RS-spec brakes. The body received RS fender flares. There was an FIA-approved rollover bar, an 88-liter fuel tank, a factory competition exhaust system, among other Group 3 items.

It isn't known how long Bonomelli kept the car, but it is believed that he raced it extensively. It was imported to the U.S. in 2009. It is currently fitted with a 2.7-liter engine, fully rebuilt with factory lightweight connecting rods, RS pistons and cylinders, and high-butterfly-type Bosch mechanical fuel injection. The Bosch racing injection pump was overhauled. The engine is blue-printed and internals were polished. The cylinder heads were rebuilt with new guides, valves, springs, and titanium valve spring retainers. There is a new oil pump and two new fuel pumps. The oiling system, with its RSR front oil cooler, is fully protected by braided wire and quick-release fittings. The oil catch tank is factory supplied. The engine mounts are titanium. The transmission was rebuilt with new, longer, 4th and 5th gears. All new bearings and other necessary parts were replaced, and a 935 shift lever and housing from Rennline installed.

The rear suspension has been upgraded with drilled rear torsion bars, a hollow rear anti-roll bar in reinforced consoles, poly-bronze control arm and spring-plate bearings, sealed mono-ball joints for the trailing arms and camber plates, and adjustable rear camber. The front suspension has received low-friction control-arm mounts, de-cambered ball joints, and an adjustable bump-steer kit. Brakes are from a 3.3 Turbo with Turbo S calipers and racing pads. Minilite alloy racing wheels are fitted, 7-inch wide in front, 8-inch wide in the rear.

After a full media blasting, the tub was resprayed 12 coats of Gulf Blue paint. All rubber seals and gaskets on the body were replaced. The front hood is aluminum, and held down by factory RS-style rubber straps. The lightweight front and rear 911R turn signal units are original. Inside, the rollbar is factory original. The wiring harness, all electrical cables, and relays are new. There is a new RS steering wheel, and the seats are factory-style Recaros in black leather. Racing harnesses are by Schroth, and valid for the next several years, according to the vendor. Elephant Racing supplied an alloy battery box, alloy floorboards and pedals. All instruments were refurbished. A pair of large Cibie driving lamps was installed using through-the-horn grille hardware. The vendor claims that with a rev limit of 7,900 rpm, the car is capable of a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 177 mph.

The 1973 911S is the last, and in the view of many, the best of the early "short-hood" 911s, the peak of the company's light-weight sports chassis. This rare and meticulously-prepared European "Special Wishes" 1973 911S coupe, fitted with a very strong engine and modern safety equipment, offers a new owner a potent and thrilling track weapon that is both very attractive and very fast

'. . . This 1973 911S was ordered new at Viscardo Automobili in Bologna by Italian hillclimb and racing driver Eugenio "Ennio" Bonomelli. Upon delivery, Ennio commissioned a Group 3 conversion to the car as he intended to compete in Group 3 FIA events and the European Hill Climb Championship with the vehicle. Viscardo Automobili carried out the conversion in February of 1973. The option package included an 88-liter fuel tank, FIA-approved roll bar, a limited-slip differential, rear RS flares, front strut brace and mounts, and a competition exhaust. The car's original color combination was Light Ivory over a lightweight black vinyl interior.

Although the car's FIA race history is unavailable, it is believed that the car competed extensively in ACI hill climb events during 1974 and 1975, driven by Bonomelli and Vincenzo Cazzago.

In the late 2000s, the car underwent a full restoration by an Italian specialist before being imported to the United States. The decision was made to color change the vehicle from Light Ivory to Gulf Blue. The car's restoration was very comprehensive: the tub was media blasted to bare metal and any necessary metal work was performed prior to the tub receiving its lovely Gulf Blue refinish. The wiring harness was replaced along with new relays and fuse panels. The gauges were rebuilt, and the interior was finished in a lightweight trim.

During the restoration, the rear suspension was upgraded with adjustable torsion bars, a hollow rear anti-roll bar, poly-bronze trailing arm and spring plate bushings, sealed mono-ball joints for the trailing arms, and adjustable camber plates. The front suspension received low-friction control arm mounts, de-cambered ball joints, and a bump steer kit. The car currently sits on period-correct Minilite 7- and 8-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P7 rubber. (The car will be delivered with a brand new set of correct Pirelli tires in RS sizing).

Modern safety amenities were added, to include the modern bucket seat and contemporary racing harnesses, when the restoration was performed. The Italian shop that carried out the restoration also added a few flourishes such as the Rennline shifter and smugglers box cover that are currently installed. These items can be returned to factory original specifications at no additional cost if the new buyer prefers.

The engine was overhauled by an engine builder in Italy and was upgraded to 2.7L modified-RS spec with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and has a redline of 7900 RPMs. The 915 gearbox was rebuilt with taller 4th and 5th gears. The car is claimed to do 0-60MPH in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 177MPH
