    Hoosier Tire

    Has anyone had experience with Hoosier Street Radials or Speedster tires for street use in the 185 size? It would be a sunny day ride so inclement weather isn't a consideration. If you are or have been a user, what is your opinion?

    Hoosier Speedster, 205-60/15 after 8 races (say 500 competition miles). This is not a cut.

    I used them on my Speedster, great tires. No they don't last long, but who cares. With the typical annual milage you will put on them they would last two years. Not great in the rain.

    The cars I've driven with them stuck good in the dry. I've heard the rain comment before though. Limited sizes too, but a good looking tire for a vintage 356, Speedster or narrow bodied 911 CA car.

    How treacherous are they in the rain? undrivable, or just "drive slow and get it back in the garage".
    I have considered them and when I called Hoosier and mentioned "street car" they refused to even discuss with me any further. Even though they are DOT, Hoosier will not sell them to yo if you say they are for a street car.

    Just drive slow, it's more of an issue as the tire wears.

    I realize this is a different tire but I have Advan A048s on the 911. The rears are worn to slicks. I went out for a drive today and it was still damp in some shady spots in the canyons. It had rained on Sunday. I was out on Wednesday afternoon. I was going uphill and exiting a turn, only applying the lightest bit of throttle since I was being very careful of the wet. It still broke loose, even at about 3000rpm (2.7 RS spec), second gear, just tipping into the throttle.

    They do tend to breakaway quick on cold days, dirty roads, wet roads, and sometimes hot days. 99% of the time it is easily modulated breakaway as in power on breakaway. Cold damp days not so much. Other than that they grip very well.

    AO48s (and the previous AO32s) are a compromise tire. Much like the Hoosier Speedster.

    As our tire sizes become less and less available, the "compromises" become more and more bearable.. I guess.

    The 225-50/15 Kumho Victoracers I bought in April are no longer available... Drove in the rain with these today actually. Was careful though.

    Much like the Avons and Michelin TBs. None of these are a good rain tire - as in "standing" rain water.

    Cold and wet? I think I'd only want to have a 40 tread wear Hoosier rain tire under me.

    I think AO48s are pretty good in the rain. I've raced on them several times at Thunderhill and there's only one spot on the track where they just give up and hydroplane (at the end of the straight behind the pits where one would like to be slowing for the tight double apex right hander). Otherwise they're ok.

    The absence of power makes #902 a great car in the rain.
