an Arcane Question on Gearshift Knobs

    Friends & Neighbors,

Please help me verify that my information is accurate, then share your thoughts with me.

According to the research material, the very early SWB had a mushroom shift knob like the 356C. The later SWB cars ('68) had a shift knob with the 901 shift pattern under clear plastic.

If I'm reading correctly, there was a third shift knob for '67 that was black, round on the top, with no shift pattern insert.

So, if I am restoring SWT #0001, would I be more likely to have had a knob with the 901 shift pattern, or the plain knob?

    Thanks to everyone.

Yes, 66-67 had no insert. So it goes mushroom, 8-ball, insert. What VIN is associated with Soft Window Targa #1?

I have a nice 356 b shift knob that I will post, just sitting in in my storage.

First, is the 356B shift knob the same as the '66-'67 911 shift knob? I didn't think they were the same.

Second, the vin # on my car is 11880001 ('68 911 SWT).

Third, 304065 answered the easy part of the question ... that the '67's had an 8-ball shift knob (without the clear plastic insert). The harder part of the question is whether am august-built '68 would still have the '67 shift know, or would it have the knob with the 901 shift pattern under clear plastic?

    Whaddya think, guys?

I believe the plain black '67 knob was threaded on, while the late '67 -> knob was the pressed on one.

There might have been a factory shift pattern knob with threads for the '67. But, I've seen conflicting information.

Jay is right; Early '67 was thread, late is crimp sleeve with pattern. I have a mid production '67 SWT, and it has a crimp sleeve style.
BTW - I have an almost mint 8 ball knob that I'll sell or trade for a mushroom.

Those of us that are new at this need to be sure that we understand what (we think) we heard/read from the experts...

Sithot's thread shows a knob with a 901 shift pattern insert, beginning in MArch, 1967. is it okay to assume that there is only one 901-pattern shift knob and the insert is under clear plastic? is the knob in sithot's thread considered the "8-ball" style?

(if so, my august, '67 build (MY'68) would be correct with 901 shift pattern under clear plastic. i hope this is correct, since that is the equipment that
    i already have.)

i want to be clear on understnading what "8-ball" means.

    thanks, guys!

Also, the "mushroom" style shift knobs were only on the very earliest, '65 vintage, likely coincident with the painted dash. The '66 model year had the round knob without shift pattern.

That is incorrect to my knowledge. I own / have owned several MY 66 911 and they all the mushroom shift knob.
