    911 TAG turbo mule

In the early 80s Porsche built a 911 that was used as a test bed for their V6 TAG turbo F1 engines. I have never seen a picture of the car, but McLaren owns, and has stored the car since it was retired in the late 80s. I would be very curious to see a photo if anyone has one, especially the engine compartment. These engines developed in the range of 1100 hp in qualifying trim, so I imagine the 911 was a handful when it spooled up.

In the new book porsche and me they have the engine in a 956(i think) as a test mule prior to supply . sure they would then fit it to a 911?

Never heard of that one! Must have been a packaging nightmare.

I hadn't either. It was mentioned in an article recently in CAR magazine. The article was about the secret building where McLaren keeps all of their old F1 cars and parts. They either keep it or crush it, and the amount of stuff they have in this building is staggering. The person that wrote the article supposedly was only the second non McL employee to have been in the place. It seems that batch of TAG blocks and parts that got out was an anomaly, Ron Dennis doesn't want anything from the cars sold. I wonder if they were leaked from Porsche?

The article just mentioned the 911 in passing and what it's function was, it could barely be seen under a cover in a three tier rack filled with F1 cars.

Similar article in this months AUTOMOBILE magazine. Some interesting shots of the warehouse, but the mention of a 911 test mule certainly peaked my interest.
