    new shell's - are we close ?

Having a good look through the current supply of reproduction sheet metal parts and with the further expansion of new sheet metal parts coming online every month the question was raised in discussion.
"are we close to the point of being able to buying replacement 911 bodies "

With all the sheet metal available now I'm surprised someone hasn't started a business resurrecting rusted out shells and converting them into ready-to-restore replacement bodies in primer, or paint to suit. Food for thought?

There is a US company doing this but their name escapes me....

There are couple of guys rumored to be working on complete all metal Speedster bodies. For now we will have to learn to like stangs if we want new bodies.

+1 on hope not... can you imagine the endless discussion on what's real an what isn't - my head hurts just thinking about it.

Maybe you could order them with any number you want ;-)

When does a reproduction body paired with newly sourced mechanicals and interior pieces simply become a well done and expensive kit car? Is there a VIN number? I guess that really adds a premium to "numbers matching".

How original is an "original" shell that has had the floors replaced? Then add the rear seat area and firewall replaced? The fenders and hood replaced? A non matching motor and tranny?

What percentage of the original body has to be left before we call it a "kit"

I would rather see a rust bucket returned to the road with a repro shell than to see it lost forever. Though I would like to see some kind of indication that the shell is a repro. A slight difference in the stamping of the floor for example.
