For those interested, here are some pics of factory plastic ties for the DOM card and spare keys. Maybe if someone recognizes them the manufacturer can be traced.

At least some code tags hadwritten

Just out of general interest: the keytag that came with my '76 Turbo Carrera #470 had a handwritten code, also the VIN number on a sticker...

The key tag for my US-delivered '73 S (#1113) also has the VIN on a sticker, although the key code is printed not handwritten. Will post a pic when I get a moment..

I called the local dealer today to see if they would be able to obtain the key number for my '73, and they said that while they could order a new key if I were to provide them with the key number, they were unaware of any procedure that would allow them to obtain the key number if I were to provide the VIN and proof of ownership.

Is there something I should be telling them that they do not know? Or can somebody recommend a dealership that I can contact that does know how to obtain the key number?

The dealer thought that it may be possible for a locksmith to decode the key number from the key itself, or from the tumblers in the key mechanism. If so, would this be the same key number that would appear on the DOM card? I need to re-key one of my door handles, so I will be taking the lock mechanism to a locksmith anyway if I don't have the right combination of tumblers at home.

    Thanks,
    Frank

I sent a red and a black (blank) Porsch key, together with my car's ignition key to copy from, to a small key cutting company here in the UK (chosen because their website mentioned they do classic car keys) - and they sent back the freshly cut keys within a few days with a note telling me what my key code was (which I didn't ask them for) which I then confirmed was indeed the correct code (as I have my car's original key code card). They told me they can work out the code of any early Porsche key - I assume just from its shape. I later found out that by coincidence the owner of the business has a '73 911 S !!

Is it too much to ask for the web address of that company?

I see that this company out of Australia offers a key decoding service by simply sending in a photo of your key. They can cut keys from the code as well. Has anyone ever used them?

I sent them an email asking for a quote to decode the keys for my '73 & '77 - I'll post the amount when I get a response.
