    Rebuilding an early throwout bearing?

Has anyone explored the possibility of rebuilding or repacking a clutch throwout bearing for our early cars?
This might seem like an extremely cheapskate-oriented question, but then again, the price of this simple part has tripled since I last needed one. At $150 retail, it gives pause.
I have never once experienced an outright TO bearing failure in the course of putting 496,000 miles on my '66, only an increase in noise when the clutch pedal is depressed. I have always suspected that renewing the grease pack might restore the bearing to quiet performance.

    Any thoughts?

    cheers and Happy New Year!

Does the 66 use a hot TO bearing?

If your TO bearing has a circlip you can take it apart and rebuild it. Of course the 'ears' were out too and those should be OK.

Fantastic SV! That's what I was hoping to see.

update: It was just as easy as described. New grease, cleanup, it spins like brand new.
