    Painting question....

    Hallo
I need an help about a little (but VERY visible) painting problem:

My unmolested 68 911S had this lip colored in black ( see the red arrow)

    Name: lip.jpg
Views: 720
Size: 102.3 KB

And i think it's correct (see this original photo )

    Name: IMG-20111231-00466.jpg
Views: 727
Size: 83.4 KB

    BUT

all the repainted car i saw has the same lip in body color.

I think my car lip has a correct finishing, but i'd like to know if somebody has an unmolested SWB and can check (or better, take a photo) and show me what he found...

    Thanks a lot

    Hi Andrea,

    I hope you are well?
I have quickly checked through 7 or 8 cars from 66-68 I have on file in original paint and none have a black painted top lip. That is not to say it was not done on your car though.

Thank you Alan for quick reply!

Now my doubt if restore like i found the car or not become enormous... i feel quite sure that the black lip is original (fundamentally WHY repaint that lip in black?)

The problem is why MY car has that peculiar painting and the other cars not... perhaps the color ( Light ivory)?...

    Hi,

It sometimes the case, that on that day, a new staff member whom was told what to do maybe did it a little different. I have seen other examples of this, such as paint around the front of the tank over the welds alone. Then different ways of black detailing the doors etc. You just never know. I had an original 67 912 in light ivory which was not painted on that lip.

    Hope this helps?

    Alan, excellent assumption!

And because i found my unmolested car in such condition, i think she DESERVE to maintain her original finishing...

Thank you Alan, you helped me to bring my personal correct way...

Hi Andrea, on page B65 of the original first version shop manual the lip is NOT shown as painted, but as Alan has said, it doesn't mean that was always the case. If yours is original and was painted, then I'd paint it again! The car in the picture was also a 68.

    Hello Andrea,

Not sure it adds much to your decision, but my 66 911 was 'unmolested' (apart from by rust!) as it spent only 11 years in use before being laid up in 1977. As you can see from the photo the lip was body colour - Light Ivory
