What is the story ona 902/16. I guess it was the optional box with the 6:29 ring & pinion. Are these desirable for any application?

Yes, but it has some different gearing than standard and the 6:29 R/P.

It's basically 70-71 911/01 5-Speed gearing, but in total ratio, it's more like the '65-68 902/1 A-F-M-S-X boxes.
It is desirable to someone who wants A-F-M-S-X total ratios, so in that sense, yes! But the pinion is almost always a weak point as you add power, therefore it's probably better to get actual A-F-M-S-X gears and use a 7/31 instead of longer gears with a 6/29. The pinion with fewer teeth is much smaller and therefore the load is distributed over a smaller area and it can break more easily.
However, if you have a reasonably (2.0/2.2) lower-powered car and you want to shorten the gears in a 1970/71, for example, swapping in the 6/29 Ring & Pinion gear is a pretty economical way to do it
I'd say value is approx. what any similar mag 901 gearbox goes for
