"Tar paper" isolation question SWB cars

    Hi,

After my project has been painted end of 2011, we started to reassemble my car. Currently we are working on the "tar" isolation and I do need some help regarding the "tar paper" insulation. Basically I know the areas where it was applied, but I am not sure if they used the "black tar paper" on the parcel shelf of 1964/65 911, too. As per the parts book it is not really clear to me. Any ideas?

Here is an original panel I cut up to make repairs. No "tar paper" on the top of the shelf but you see the "insulation" on the silver cardboard/vinyl parcel shelf itself. Note the torn "sound pad" from the engine side of the parcel shelf. Thanks.

I am editing this post. Of further thought, prompted by comments and a closer look at my own pics, there SHOULD BE insulation on the shelf and, in fact, it is pictured in this photo. It lies on top of the metal and if glued is only lightly so. I am deleting a following post which was also misleading. Thanks again.

Yes SWB "tar paper" is not such. It is horsehair impregnated with tar..or some such. Thanks.

    first there is this layer

lift up the tray and you have this layer of horse hair

then you have the tar/hair layer. this is also known as dante's 10s circle of hell. if you have a rusty pan, than the 11th layer is beyond the tar/hair. below this is just metal (hopefully... otherwise you need to do rust repair)

My car has the thick black tar/hair covered by the softer whool/hair (tan stuff) all around the car (its like that under the side panels too) as far as i know mine is pretty original on the interior. I have a 68.

the 67 i parted out did not have the tan stuff, just the really thick tar/hair.. but it had also had the interior redone by a hack. so it wouldnt surprise me if he removed that softer tan layer and left only the tar..

you can see the left over horsehair/tar stuck on the back of the interior panel (look at the black clump of sh* near the clip on the bottom left of the pannel.. or top left the way it shows in the pic...)

i think it may have been removed (this stuff soaks up water and causes rust) and what you see is a clean metal piece with crap still stuck on the interior panel.

"Tar paper" isolation question SWB cars

This is my 67S, it appeared to have the "horsehair" insulation which it looks like it is glued down with a coating of tar like sealer. After taking to bare metal, priming, painting, I then stuck down self adhesive tar-like pads, then jute padding on that.

Ed, That really does look most excellent! And effective too. I'd even like to sit back there when it's all done.... but for no longer than 15 minutes Thanks.
