    Alan Johnson's last race team.

I just posted the story of Alan Johnson's last race team. It was a two year adventure. Here's the link to "Along For The Ride", http://www.johnstraub.blogspot.com

    Thanks Chuck.

Hi Raj, thanks for the nice words, glad you enjoy it.

-i was wondering if the bozzani 914/6GT spyder on your photo is the same one from the 73 parade-and does it exist today.
I don't think so. But I can ask Alan next time I see him, what happened to that car.

What a hairy car that was! Thanks for posting this bit of history, John. It's particularly interesting to me because I wound up with Vic Ofner's white Carrera after he moved to Hawaii. I'm grateful for his attention to mechanical detail every time that I drive it.

Looks like you guys had quite a time.

GREAT John, can't wait till that update.
Fascinating story, Thanks for sharing .

We met Alan J. at Parade a few times and he was a real gem to talk with or listen to when he gave his sessions. I bet it was a treasure to be a part of that team.

FYI, Alan Johnson's 2.8 RSR has just gone on sale here in the UK (no affiliation).

1973 PORSCHE RSR 2.8 Delivered in Signal Orange to Alan Johnson of Bozzani Porsche-Audi in Monrovia, California in April1973. RSR 0853 was taken straight to Ontario Motor Speedway for Road & Track magazine to conduct a track test of Porsche’s latest racer (R&T Aug ’73) Johnson contested the Ontario 4 hours, a round of the IMSA Championship and 0853 was then sold to Randolph Townsend of Reno, Nevada. Townsend raced 0853 in 5 SCCA races scoring 4 podiums including 2 first places and then entered it for the 1975 Daytona 24 Hrs. Back at Bozzani’s Race Department for preparation it was decided to upgrade the car to the latest RSR specification which included taking the engine out to 3.0 litres. At Daytona 0853 qualified 25th out of an entry of 150 cars and was running in 5th place when a cracked piston cost an hour in the pits. This delay and a subsequent fuel pump failure dropped them to a 12th place finish. 1976 the car was sold and send to Andial for updating to 1976 FIA Group 5 specification. 0853 now running as #91 raced it throughout ’76 and ’77 in both the IMSA and Trans Am Championships as well as another World Championship outing in the Watkins Glen 6 Hrs. For 1978 IMSA’s rules changed to conform with FIA Group 4 and the new owner upgraded 0853 again and raced it through to the end of 1982 including 3 Sebring 12 Hrs, ’78, ’79 and 1980. This owner retained the car until 2003 when it was sold to a European collector who entrusted 0853 to marque specialist Roitmayer in Munich for a complete, no expense spared restoration to original ’73 RSR specification. It was found that the car had never suffered any major damage and was rebuilt using virtually all the original parts including the 1976 spec Andial 3.0 litre engine. For safety reasons some modern replacements; fuel cell, belts and fire extinguishers etc. were installed, the original items are still with the car. On completion 0853 was finished in its original Signal Orange and has had minimal test mileage since.

John has posted Part 2 of Vic Ofner's reflections on their adventure with the wild 944 Turbo. Imagine what these guys could have done with a budget!
