Dealerships in Florida that were selling Porsches in 1966

    Hey All,

I'm starting to narrow down the origins of my 1966 911 and I've gotten to back to the 4th and 3rd owners of the car. #3 seems to think that the car spent most of it's life in Florida and was sold there originally. Hopefully I will also get to talk to the second owner, as he is related to the third.

Regardless, I was wondering what dealerships would have been selling cars in '66, and would any that still exist (say Brumos for instance) have any records that would go back that far. I realize it's a complete long shot, but it's worth a try. The car spent most of it's recent life in the St. Pete area, so I would assume that in the pre-internet days that it was probably trading hands somewhat locally. For example I know that it was in that area (at least in Florida) as far back as '83 per the title records.

    The hunt for info continues....

    Dan

    Karim,

Thanks for the list. That's many more that I thought there would be. Seems like a lot of vendors for a marque that was producing such small numbers. I was looking at some of the current addresses with google street view. My, how times have changed some of these areas!

    Thanks again for the information.

Dan, remember that back then most foreign car dealers handled several makes because volume was small for each.
They often became the default sellers because they were the sole service source. German Motors in WPB sold BMW,
Mercedes, Porsche, Volvo, etc. Others like Brumos started as Volkswagen and BMC dealers, as did Orange Motors.
Facilities were often just a garage and a lot... drive past the German Motors building today (located on a side street)
and it's hard to imagine it was a dealership!

+1 to that. I figured they are a lot like motorcycle shops today (and then too). Not odd to see several brands located in one "dealership". It would be so cool to have some information about where and when this car was delivered.

Is the kardex a way to get to the bottom of things in that regard? Not seeing many, I don't know if dealership information is something that shows up. I presume that it would be considering that the kardex was a way of keeping track of warranty work.

Any chance that someone is able to produce copies these days?

Yes. I was able to get the dealer adress trough the Kardex.

BTW , around 1968, Florida and California had the most. Other states had two or three dealers only. North&South Dakota none...

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

    Karim,

Good to see this. My car was originally from Jacksonville. I thought naturally it had to be a Brumos car, but now i see it might be Porsche car Southwest. Sigh.. the plot thickens.
