Are you sure? 3180007 is an engine number for a standard '68 Targa.

    1968 Sportomatic numbers are: 218XXXX (T), 338XXXX, 418XXXX (S).

    For engines:
318XXXX is type 901/07 ROW sporto
338XXXX is type 901/17 USA sporto

    for transmissions:
    318XXXX is type 905/00
Anyway, sorry but I have not come across 3180007 yet. What VIN is this for?

My mistake, Dave... my reference source http://www.elferhelfer.com/fzident.htm# highlights US models but doesn't indicate this is a Sporto number.

The last 911 I drove that had SPORTOMATIC written across it's deck lid was a converted 5 speed. It wasn't the 1st one.
If Porsche had the equivalent of a GM Turbo 400 (albeit with 4 cogs) it would have been a great transmission and I probably would have owned one. Bullet proof, couldn't kill it and the choice of anyone making serious horsepower "in the day".

MB made a good one for the 928 which was essentially an S class box, although it won't fit your car.

The Sportomatic is "Too British" for the Spartan penchant in me when it comes to things mechanical (KISS). "Why should we use 2 parts in the assembly when we could use 10?" "Blimey Nigel, you're absolutely spot on!" (and thus the Vincent was born but that's another story)

Anyhow, I wish you good luck with the hunt. You could save a lot of time and money if you bagged the idea but that is your choice.

The first automatic in a 911 (oops, I meant to say tiptronic, not automatic) was also a gearbox developed by Benz. The 964 tiptronic. Maybe that is why it is sooo wrong.

That is only one reason why I never refer to the site.
