Thread: anyone out there who "restores" engine fans?

anyone out there who "restores" engine fans?

Cleaning this fan up to pair up with a nice, clean engine complete with newly plated MFI linkage is proving to be impossible. Don't have the ability to blast myself and drill out that center piece (if that can even be done) to replate- any suggestions? Anyone out there who restores engine fans (I thought it sounded crazy but maybe a good business opportunity for someone!). Any info is appreciated.

This is one of those parts that makes or breaks a really, really nice engine restoration. I bite the bullet and purchase new. I think they're still under $800.

What about the housing, you still have to match it. How do his coatings hold up with dirt etc.?

Mark's finishes do look outstanding. I've wondered how the coating will hold up with the abuse of fan speed and heat. My own fan was "restored" at one point by grey powder coating. This held up for maybe 15 years but eventually the leading edges of the blades let in a little moisture and the magnesium began to bubble the coating. I recently had the fan and housing glass beaded and then I coated it with Gibbs. Seems to be holding up well and weathering to a nice mellow Mg finish.

BTW: I just looked at the price of a new fan from Porsche. $959 Ouch! Probably worth it since this tends to be a central visual point.

The Best way to restore the magnesium is to use Gibbs Brand penetrating oil. Believe me it really works.
