912 mods for a hot rod

I'd like to build a hot rod ala Magnus Walker. I don't want to "ruin" an S or an E, and would like to start with a cheaper tub. Maybe a T, if rough. But a 912 would be perfect. I have a 2.7L collecting dust in my garage. Other than the engine mounts, are any other mods to the tub needed just to get the car up to a 911 configuration?

how to make a 912 one less:

    step 1)

cut out the 912 motor mounts,
    weld in 911 motor mounts
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...l=1#post534386

    step 2)
swap the gear box from the 912 for one that is properly geared for a 911.

    step 3)
brakes.. 912 and 911 2.0 normal share the same brakes. you will want bigger brakes to stop your bigger 2.7

    step 4)
    debadge and rebadge

thats pretty much it. interior, wheels, trim is all relatively the same except where S trim would apply. there are no other differences between the cars.

    additional notes:

magnus has an affinity for swb cars. if you havent noticed most of them are. while not a difference between 911 and 912, there are some fundamental differences between 67 and earlier and later cars (68 was a swb too but had made changes)

67 and earlier had a single master cylinder brake system, both 911 and 912. for safty reasons, do a dual master cylinder conversion.. a 68 is a swb and already has this..

68 and earlier have the early front end... parts are more expensive. ball joints about 180-220 each. cant do turbo tie rods unless you go with elephants longer turbo tie rods. going to a later front end (ie like an SC?) will afford bigger brakes and more affordable ball joints.

You'll probably want to do something about adding the oil tank and associated plumbing.

I would add that the 912 usually has desirably lower gearing to make the 4cyl more sporty feeling. When coupled with the six, you have a VERY fun combo. My 912 had/has AFMSX gears, which are a little short for highway, but great around town. Naturally using a 901 and 2.7 requires a bit more caution depending on the amount of power you are making, and I believe the joining of motor/tranny requires a different pressure plate.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I'll 2nd that the common AFMSX 912 gear set is awesome on a hot zoot 2.7,2.8, or 2.9. The 2.8S makes an awesome street motor (or a 2.8 SS based on a 3.0).

BTW, there is no need to remove the 912 engine mounts. It's a bit of a squeeze to get that plug out, but its doable. I'm leaving mine and just adding the 911 corners. Given the ease of an engine drop, I'm nursing the idea of a full tilt 2.8 and a modded 616 so I can swap as the mood strikes :-). Folks have used aftermarket VW dry slump pumps on the 616, so that oil tank can be useful regardless.

All that said, you might want to take a hard look at the LN Engineering web page. Charles Navarro has totally moved the 616 performance Bar. He's In the 170 HP at stock revs range for street use. He's got a great write up.

I'll pass on Navarro. I'll take a twin plug 1900 CC Benton built monster any day of the week using John Bentons own cylinders...

Go a 3.2. It's a hoot to drive - love it. Easy, reliable power. Easy installation

    The middle road.

Or you can have a little of both. 100 lbs less in the rear than a 6 and the weight is forward like a 4. Power in the 2.4 to 2.7 range. Some look for the most power. Some look for balance and handling.
