    DC->Boston via NYC in a 1966 912

    Hey All,

    I'm taking the '66 912 out of the confines of the DC beltway to see how she does out on the open(ish) road. This Saturday I'll be heading up the seaboard to NYC for an overnight and then onto Boston the next day; then the reverse next Thursday.

    Any good suggestions for what to do before I go? I have a lot of spares (ignition bits, belts, lights, gen pulley halves + hub, fuel lines, new tire in the boot) plus enough tools to completely disassemble any components on the side of the road. In addition I've got the requisite supply of wire-ties, duct-tape, gasket material, a headlamp, jack-plate, scissor jack, 12V test lamp, breaker bar, 36mm 3/8 drive socket, etc etc etc. Not my first road trip in/on an antique (BMW R50/2 DC->Maine a few summers ago), so I feel as though I am aware of the risks and of course the rewards :-).

    Recently the car has had some major "peripheral" upgrades/overhaul. I've got "new" (re-machined) solex carbs, a rebuilt distributor, fresh lubes, new brake pads, new lines and calipers, +++. I'm pretty confident on her abilities (I drive it everyday), plus I'm keeping myself to a route that avoids high highway speeds for a considerable fraction of the time.

    Just thought I would ping the group to see if there was something you all thought I was missing as a preventative measure.

    Wish me luck!

    Dan

    If you've been driving it, all the gremlins will come out. Address those, and you're good for thousands of miles.

    Dan,
    Go for it!
    I just drove my 73T from NJ to Atlanta.....including through the snow storm last weekend. Had to overnight in Charlotte, where Tony Stewart's Nascar backup car was on the way to Daytona. The Hampton Inn card key turned out to be an effective ice scraper. 900 miles of smile.
    Enjoy.

    Made it to Boston

    Now I just have to make it back... calling for snow in the NE this week...

    Here are a few shots moving through Brooklyn. Nice view of the WTC site and the B-Bridge.

    Back in DC. Not a problem to report. Over 870 miles covered and some snow in eastern Mass. The grey ghost never missed a beat. The only roadside repair was a front marker light bulb that was replaced. I also had to give my front hood latch some attention after some bumpy roads in NYC caused it to release thanks to some thick grease and a new seal keeping the crudded latch in some serious tension.

    Overall, I was comfortable and it was really easy to keep up with the pace of traffic; even on the NJTP. I would certainly do it again tomorrow.
