Book recommendations: aviation or auto history?

My uncle is going through a tough patch and I thought digging into a book about something he loves might take his mind off things. Looking for a good read, not a picture/reference book. Aviation history would be great (he's a huge flight sim nerd). Motoring history would be a good second place (he's a car guy going way back: new '57 Ghia, traded for a '56 speedster, brought it back to the US and traded for a new '59 'Vette and cash...).

I'm leaning toward "Flying the SR-71 Blackbird" by Richard Graham or Ben Rich's "Skunk Works".

FWIW, I'm in the middle of Ron Chernow's "Washington: A Life" and recommend it highly.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    Thumbs up

The best I've read lately has been 'Go Like Hell Ford, Ferrari, and their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans'
    By A.J. Baime.......

Can't recommend it highly enough........ It hooks'ya by the first page.

    Cheers

The Garth Stein book? It's great, and I sent a copy to my pop for his birthday last year. But given what's going on it wouldn't be the best choice for my uncle right now.

Go Like Hell might be the ticket, Chuck. I may have to get two copies.

If he is into the beginnings of sporty car racing in the U.S. the whole B.S. Levy series is a thinly veiled novelistic retelling.

there's a great British aviation mag on warbirds - vintage airplanes. It has a lot on the current restorations and has lots of true story articles on bombing and fighter missions. It's call FlyPast. You can get at B&N or subscribe for $69. There's a webpage www.flypast.com. If you like WWII flying history - fantastic! Cheers - David
