    Harness Bars for early 911s

I'm interested in installing a harness "guide" bar in my 1970 T - from searches in this forum, I understand that there is an issue with the height of the shoulder belt mount in the older cars and the resulting angle of the harness as it goes up to the bar. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with products that actually fit the car properly - if so, could you please share the product, where I can get it, and rough cost?

If anyone has a good used piece I would also be very interested.

    Thanks,
    Ayan

From a back protection point of view it is important that the "guide" is about the same height or a bit higher than the driver's shoulders. This prevents compression of the spine in a crash.

How early is your T in the production year? I have seen very early 70s still with the rear parcel shelf harness mounts. The 70 rear shelf has the cut outs for them in the card but, are covered over with the vinyl. Right around Dec 69/Jan 70 it appears the parcel shelf no longer had the mounts. Those are at a slightly higher elevation from the seats.

    Thanks for your replies.

Jeff, I agree that the bar needs to be at or slightly above shoulder height - I've checked out all the harness mounting instructions from Simpson and other harness mfrs.

Michael, I'm not sure of the production date of my car - the chassis # is 005XX - and unfortunately the car is still in offsite storage for the winter. Do you know of anyone who produces a bar that fits on these mounts? Or does one just mount direct to the mounting point with an eye bolt?

    Thanks again...

In my experience with my '71T (high anchors) and '74S (low anchors), the "Stable Energies" bar fits both as it is length adjustable, but ends up high in an early car as the bar only sits an inch or two below the anchor. The Automotion bar that has side plates and sits further back and down has no length adjustment and only fits later cars that have the lower anchor points.

Hey Mike, thanks for your response. Your previous post that you linked is what got me questioning what bar to use. I'm just wondering if anyone has since found a solution!

    cheers,

Michael, I made it out to the car today and took a look at the parcel shelf... and it looks like I DO have humps under the rubberized undercoating in that area. I will have to cut the undercoating back to confirm, but it looks like I do have the factory mounts. What is the proper way to mount a harness to those mounts? Where does that mount get it's strength?

    Thanks,
    Ayan

The mount is welded to a strengthening plate which in turn is welded to the parcel shelf to distribute the load. Without messing with the rubber shelf sound pad, you might be able to see the plate from the engine side up under that sound pad.

Eye bolts were screwed into those mounts for harness clips. I've also seen REPA rectractible harnesses attached there directly using belt end hardware primarily used on VWs. Instead of a flat plate belt end (like our Porsche REPA pieces), the VW piece has a slight bend in it. Perfect for aligning with the harness bolt socket.
