    Help with engine stamp

    Posted in Pelican also

Help. I'm thinking about buying a '72 T but the engine stamp looks funny to me. The numbers on my 930 are stamped on a portion of the case that appears to be cast. The numbers on this engine look almost to be on a machined "pad". I apologize for the crappy iphone pix. The numbers are 6120XXX, which checks out for a '72 T.
The owner has owned the car for over 20 years so to think anyone would have restamped a T case would be unusual, but then again, I can't rule anything out. The engine has it's original MFI.

    Thanks in advance,

The thread above has great detail on the 2.0 engine #'s. The third # (build#) is not present on 1970 and newer engines.
Other than the build #, the stampings are very much the same on the 1970 and later engines. Note that there are two locations for the engine serial # based on the aluminum and magnesium case designs. 914/6 is different again.

    Gled,
    I didn't notice a type #, doesn't mean it wasn't there.

But looking at the examples in the other thread, the numbers are on the forward facing (rear of car) section of the case. The one I am looking at has it facing the right side of the car, (the machined pad in my photo).... very strange.

I agree, the numbers don't look correct, especially the '3'. Can you get a clear photo of the serial number area?

Unfortunately I didn't take any better pictures. I do remember the numbers not being stamped very deep.

The location is correct for a mag case, but the format seems odd. Should be stamped, not engraved. Could have been a replacement case with the number transfered??

Here is another thread with an example:

So if it is a restamp, how would that affect resale when it came time to sell?

If everything else looks okay I think maybe a mechanic transferred the number from the old case to the new case. Seen it a few times over the years.
