1974 Carrera RS 3.0

In doing some research for the upcoming Magnum Opus Rally, we found these pics. One of the stages in our rally is a re-run of a stage from the 1974 WRC event. This is the Carrera RS 3.0 from Poland that ran the event. I previously posted some other pics of this car somewhere on the board. I'll eventually have some proper scans, but these will have to do for now.

Those 3.o RSs are so cool and so rare. It looks so goofy with those skinny tires. I assume it was on it's way to some gravel stages, as it doesn't look cold enough for snow. Did you ever figure out what that is in front of the oil cooler? Nice array of Oscars .

There wasn't any snow to speak of that year, so I think the 6" wheels and tires are simply a matter of not having availability in other sizes of gravel tires. They would have run wider tires I'm sure if they could have. Some of the stages back then were no more than 2-track jeep trails over long distances, so a steel guard plate up front makes sense. It was nothing like it is today where the rallies are a series of sprints run mostly on wide relatively smooth gravel roads.

No service parcs back then either. You just found a spot on the shoulder of the road. Here's the Italians servicing Markku Alen's Fiat 124 Abarth:
