    Engine project, help needed!!!

    Hi guys
I need some help from the knowledgeable people here.
I’m rather lost. I’ve tried to search for the web and forum, but too much informations to cross than, if there is anybody willing to help me it would be great.
So, the project is to build a Carrera6 / 911R replica engine, but on a budget. I know, there are some thing which can’t be put in the same sentence, but… Everybody is allowed to dream.
As finding a cheap 901/20 901/21 case is impossible, I was planning to sart with an early 911 2.0S engine basis.
I would like to have a mag case, a counterweighted crank, and some suitable rods, the right heads able to be twin pluged ….(adios titanium rods…)

My problem is that I’m confused between 901/02 case 901/03….
What would you advise me? Can I do it with any 2 liters mag case or do I need a 2.0s case? I’ve been told that the only difference is oil jetting under pistons and that it was possible to convert a T or L case to S spec easily.
Same for the heads, and all the other bits.

What would you advise me? The only thing I’m almost sure is that if I want to run high rpm, I need the S crank; everything else is a mystery…

Any input / leads / offer will be warmly welcome!

    Thanks

    Olivier.

What exactly do you mean by a budget? What is your number. Also what is your time frame, and what are you going to do with the engine?

I'm gathering parts for a high rev, high power 2L engine and have done lots of research, bought some stuff but haven't got it finished yet. There is lots of info on the pelican engine forum. This has good info http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-e...questions.html

If you want high revs you will need a 66mm counterweighted crank and AFAIK either S or E engines had these. Given this seems to be a hot rod engine I wouldn't worry too much about /02 or /03 numbers. Any mag case will need mods such as shuffle pins, case savers, oil bypass and piston squirters. Ready done cases turn up at times but there are some specialist shops who can do this. Later mag cases such as 7R are stronger but there is some debate about the need for this if you stay around 2 litre. Oil pump will need an upgrade, modified SC oil pumps appear to be a good budget solution or GT3 is the best, but pricey.

Heads can easily be drilled for twin plugs. Using later 2.2 or 2.4 heads will get you a better combustion chamber shape and bigger valves at a lot less cost than the rare 69S heads. Anything much over 10:1 CR should use twin plugs but you have a choice of crank fire systems if you don't have to have the looks of the traditional twin plug distributor. A few custom twin plug distributors seem to be around but original stuff is crazy$ but even custom stuff isn't cheap.

Lots of rod choice with R&R or Pauter etc. You will need good pistons, JE seems a common choice and cheaper than Mahle.

Are you planning carb or MFi? Racing or street use? Any racing rules to consider? A well built single plug 2L engine can still make around 200hp with careful part selection.

You can spin a non-counterweight crank up faster than the counterweight version. Bearings may not last as long. A junk 2.2t engine might be your ticket to shallow heads and non-CW crank.

If you don't already have it buy Bruce Anderson's 911 performance handbook. It will help you.

"On a Budget"... what medications are you on? Just kidding... but any twin-plug engine build is going to be very expensive. Your description implies that you have no parts for the engine at this time and will need heads, case, p's and c's, etc. Your best bet is probably a good 2.2 engine rather than a 2.0. Reason for this is the combustion chamber shape of the heads. The 2.0S engine is difficult to find anything for (trust me, I have one in pieces right now) and then costs much more for everything.

Bruce Andersons book is great for research on this stuff.

Look at pelican parts for general prices on parts.

    901/02 is an S engine while 901/03 is a T engine.
A high power engine is best built on an aluminum case.
