Advise on removal of shift knob

I know this isn't a 911 but same shifter as an early 911. I want to remove an after market shift knob and go back to original OEM knob with shift pattern. Can someone advise on removal of the after market one. It has a chrome sleeve with grooves that is glued on the shaft that I can't budge off can I heat it up with a torch for removal or will that damage the shaft. Thanks for your help.

PO fix for a loose knob, it should have a pressure fit sleeve fitted under the knob.

It looks like super glue was used in your photo? Acetone / nail polish remover works to brake down the glue, but you will have to cover you shift gator and carpet because if you get any on them it will probably discolor them.

    Hope that helps.....

Thanks but I need to remove the whole groved sleeve that you see in the picture it is glued on. My original will not fit over this, I have the original 901 shift knob with the pressure sleeve to mount.

I think heat would be ok. But not too much... the bottom end of the shift lever is glued into the ball thingy at the bottom. Maybe some wet rags to act as a heat barrier?

Or slice thru it long ways with a Dremel and then pry it off. Most adhesives are pretty weak in the "pry" direction.

Those are generally held on with an allen set screw, but you would have seen that, right!

Ed, the leather knob pulled right off it was glued on no allen screw. Now I am left with the grooved sleeve on the shaft that was put on with strong glue or epoxy (SEE PICTURE). Would a torch be OK to heat and then pull off like Mike D. suggests?

It sure looks like a set screw on the back side of that sleeve in your photo. I've never seen one glued on. But if for some odd reason it is glued on then I agree heat might work to get it off. A industrial hot air gun or a Bernz-o-matic should work, just hot to the touch, we don't need cherry red here

Watch out you don't discolor the chrome.
