Build Year vs Titled Year - Serial Numbers

Pardon the dumb question, I'm just trying to learn. If a 911 was built say in 1965, delivered late in 1965, but first titled as a 1966, is it considered a 1965 or a 1966 in the early 911 world? I realize this is probably starting to get into the questions of serial numbers. I have looked at the Red Book but I am guessing that isn't the whole story, knowing this crowd. Can anyone give me a good primer on the subject? Thanks in advance,

There are three dates - build date, the actual date the car was built; MY, the model year of the car; title registration, in some states back in the day the date on the title based on the date titled.

VIN # will usually determine MY, and is what the car is known as (a 1970). For the 1964/1965/1966 I seem to recall that there is some discussion as to the cut off #'s. I think the 901's are locked down.

Some states would title a car as the year it was titled.

You are asking some good questions.

OK good, now I am confused. A 901? By "901" are you referring to the very very first cars? I thought they were referred to as "300" series s/n's, yes/no?

And then after the first 235 (produced in 1964 with s/n #'s 300) the '65's are s/n's 301 and then 302? My reference source here is Keith Martin's SCM website - I'm sure not saying it's accurate or trying to debate, it's just what I'm going by. Again, apologies if I'm off base. I appreciate the patience and the history lesson...

Same cars, see second paragraph of your link. 901 was the original model designation until Peugeot claimed all three digit model designations with a middle 0.

    OK, I've got that.

But what do you mean when you say "the 901's are locked down"?

There have been discussions as to the model change over dates. There are threads on the changes by MY and cars built after change over dates with earlier parts. I am not an expert or even a student of these early cars, but you will find those folks here on this board.

So I am thinking your reference to the locked down "901" series means the same as SCM's reference (paragraph 7) to the "300" series serial numbers? - ie - the first 235 cars?

I think it would probably be a lot more accurate to say I fall into the category of knowing just enough to be dangerous. As I spend more time on this board, I am finding the very early 911 history to be very interesting (a good place to start, right?).

And yes, I will admit I haven't done the historic posts searching yet. So, I guess I should get to work huh?
