    67 911 S SWT body numbers

Ran across the last three digits of the VIN today in both headlight buckets. For those deep into early Porsche trivia this is probably nothing new. But what it means to me is that the early car fenders and doors were fitted to the specific car, and from the looks of the narrow gaps on this car, and the fenders never having been removed it certainly shows.

Looks like it has the tabs for the later headlights? Were they added, or are they original to the headlight buckets.

Hi Roy, the SWB cars would have the fenders fitted then a couple dowels were fitted so that the fender was perfectly lined up when refitted to the car.

That's right. As the body shop fitted doors, fenders, etc, they could 'reject' ill fitting pieces, which usually found their way into the spare parts inventory. Once fitted, they were stamped to ensure replacement on the correct car. They don't build 'em like that these days, eh?

on 356, the factory would drill the hood hinges to insure being able to reinstall the panel. When you say on a 911, they install dowels, where and what size are they. Never noticed them. Anyone have an image?

Here are a few pics from my '67. Don't have the dowel size... if I'd have to guess I'd say 3-4mm, but you can see approximate location...

The first volume 911 shop manual covers this. The rivits are 5mm and are to be mounted (2 per fender) when fender is fitted then brazed to the inner fender panel as shown above.
