numbered body panels / parts, where? when? which ones?

    Hi All,

I am in the initial stages of planning the resto / rebuild of my 1968 911. The car is rusty and has been "rsr'd" with the requisite turbo flares....nice.

I have been looking for stamped numbers to try to confirm which, if any parts are original to the car (hood, fenders, engine lid, etc.). I cannot find any so I am assuming that they stopped by '68....this is an early '68 MY btw.

I also have a '66 911 and that car will be next so I would like to know:

Which parts were stamped and where?
What year did they stop stamping them?

Any other info about serial number and / or date stamps on parts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Kevin

I am just finishing up a resto on my 68 911s coupe and while I was taking it apart I found the vin number wrote under the dash pad and stamped under the knee pad but that was all....didnt find anything on the doors or hood etc.

The fenders are numbered in the headlight buckets as shown in the post on this page started by E tex speedo. The engine lid is numbered on the top, on right side of central divider. I don't know where the hood is numbered, I'm sure some one else will know.

Yes , as far as it seems.....numbered panels are thru (somepoint - not sure if all the way thru production year) 1967 MY on Porsche (ex-Reuter) bodies only. Possibly longer into production year on 911 models vs. 912.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info thus far....I will check my parts and report back...

The car has a production completion date of 9/8/1967 per COA.

It still has the engine lid with the bar in the middle which I have read changed early to mid '68. So I am assuming that peice is original to the car as it also has the original color on the under side (bahama yellow) under the repaint (guards red).

I could not find any stamped numbers on either the engine lid or the fenders, both of which I am almost certain are original to the car. So I guess they stopped by this point in production.

    Thanks
