Euro Trip 2013 or Shipping a car to Europe and back.

Rather than continue on Magnus' "Out of Control Hobby" thread I thought I'd ask my question in a new post.

My wife is from Austria (Vorarlberg) and I spend a lot of time driving the Alpine roads but hankering for my 911. I've been thinking for some time that I would do this for an approaching milestone b-day (still a couple of years away).

Has anybody here shipped their car to Europe for the purpose of driving it rather than selling? Were there any problems regarding insurance, national regulations. What is the best way, most economical?

    Thanks

It is a long thread. (worth a look) The info you are looking for is in the first few pages. Do a search as there are more threads on this subject.
Very cool Idea and something I will do in the future.

Expect to be w/o your 911( in your possession) for 2 months. Everything else is just $$. OK, maybe $$$$$$$.

    I have and there are.

Shipping is easy - a non issue - use any number of brokers that come up with a Google search. It's just $$. But insurance is another thing.

I have been able to get 5 day insurance from a dutch company, but have continued to come up against a dead end for insurance for longer periods. The 5 day option has worked for me as I pick the car up at port, drive a few days, and drop off. There are a few outfits in the UK who offer short term for Europe but it is equal to a full years premium in the USA and quite a hassle - it is designed for UK resdients. The US companies won't touch it. At least that's what I've found.

    Try these guys:

    http://thuminsurance.com/

They let me, as a foreigner, insure the car I bought in the USA for 6 months. Not cheap, but better than nothing.

In Germany there are temporary license plates (so-called Überstellungskennzeichen) that allow you to drive for ~5 days before they expire. They have a yellow stripe with the expiration dates on the left side of the plate.

The thing about this is that the plates are surprisingly easy to get. I was able to order a pair online and had them shipped to me next day. You get a set of empty registration papers which you have to fill out yourself and then you’re good to go. Basic insurance (Haftpflicht) is included. Plates are valid in all of Europe.

I’m not a German citizen and still got them no questions asked… in fact I see a lot of people driving their cars with these plates here in Austria. I can dig up some more information if you are interested.

It seems that I rember, not sure but Hageraty had something about overseas insurance. Thru another overseas insurer. Agin my memeroy may be wrong. I was looking into about the same thing a couple of years back. My policy is in storage with the 73. I do know for sure that the Nurnigbergring was exempt for all coverage of any kind from just about everyone. HUMPH! Now why would that be
