    Is my oil tank clean?

    Essers,

Had my oil tank ultrasonic cleaned by an experienced outfit (pacific oil cooler). Had some gunk in it which I think contributed to a spun rod bearing.

Anyway. All sludge gone; however, if I reach my finger thru the oil drain on the bottom I can feel a little scaley rust. My finger comes out w some rust colored dust At first I was flipped. But then I thought there must be a zillion tanks out there in fine running cars that have some rust from condensation rust?

So. Is this clean? Or no?

When my tanks come back from POC they are filled with a light oil, but it's not like Cosmoline or anything. The first thing I do is fill them with anticorrosion aviation oil and shake it around to thoroughly coat the inside.

Anyway, they do a great job of cleaning the tank, but they don't remove the rust. So if you think you have rust, then it's time to get a new tank, it's not worth the risk of stroking your motor out.

The oil goes straight from the tank to your bearings, no filter. Crazy, but Porsche left it that way till the 993. Curiously, they had a filter before the bearings in the race cars...

Best place for the filter is where the cooler is. Remove the cooler and do a 993 setup. Put the cooler somewhere else.

I called Pacific Oil Cooler and they said, "That's not right. Send it back and we will fix it." How about that: a good story of someone standing behind their work.
