185/70x15 fits perfectly on deep sixes, so I don't understand why spend the money ($$$$$$$) on 7R wheels?

Thanks Andy and Harry for the images.

Well, because 185/70 gives a little lovely stretch on the 7"...

I use Deep 6 by Maxilite without tubes. To clear the oil tubes, I use spacers at the rear. Running 185er Avon front and rear gives a very good handling car with a nice stance.

Edit: From the Coker website, the 185HR15 and 185VR15 are the same rolling diameter (about 26.5")

So, based on what I understand from reading all this, the 185 size tire used on sports purpose cars in period was not a 70-series but the taller HR type tire? Is a 185VR15 and 185HR15 the same rolling diameter?

I bought Vredestein 185VR15 sized tires for my LWT build not realizing they were taller than the 185/70R15 tires normally used. I like the look since they fill the wheel wells a little better and seem to look more period / retro racer to my eye. I haven't run them yet since I'm still finishing up the engine but was hoping they would work and not be too tall for my '71E.

For anyone who's run these, will they work on front 6" and rear 7R wheels?

I would say 185/15 is too high but guess it will fit the car and all rims 5,5-7".
70 is the side profile high, 70% of 185 is the side wall. 185/15 has side walls 80% or 82% of the width.

VR, HR etc is just the speed rating and has nothing to do with dimentions.

    .

As far as I'm aware. the 70 series tyres weren't generally available until some time in 1968 so, prior to this production 911's utilised 165x15 tyres.

When the 1969 models were introduced, cars equipped with 6in Fuchs wheels were fitted with 185/70 tyres.

The exception to this was the 2.0 911E models fitted with the 'comfort' option which included 5.5 x 14in Fuchs with (full height) 185x14 tyres.
