    August 2012 550-03 Seinfeld

In the letters section, Dr. Metz raises a great question which was how much of a car can be fabricated before it becomes a recreation and not a restoration. 550-03 had little in the way of original parts and went through a great deal of fabrication to be put back together again. A fabulous job was done and the car looks great. I am very aware that there are no panels available as they are not made by the factory, but is this a restoration of recreation?

I am not sure there is a quick answer and much of this can become philosophical. I just makes me wonder what everyone thinks.

It is a awesome car. It is what it is. What other options did he have? Leave it in pieces, or turn it into a parts car?

Agreed that it is beautiful and agreed that they had little other choices. I get all that, but the question raised was not that.

The chassis and original number is the key. These things had hand made body panels from day one and no doubt they all differed slightly. The panels also tended to evolve due to race damage and tweaks to improve airflow/ cooling etc.

I don't think there would be ANY 100% undamaged, totally original cars of this type anywhere so it is a bit of a moot point.

I'm sure any future owners will take into consideration the accuracy and quality of the restoration/recreation. semantics really

Jeff I agree....until another 550 surfaces with the same numbers, this is the original that was restored as correctly as possible by someone that could afford to. There are many valuable street and racing cars from years past that do not have many original body panels....
