One of many long weekend projects. Too hot to drive today and too wet to drive over the next few days with lots of thunderstorm warnings, which often come with hail when the fronts collide, as they are expected to.

When I bought my car, the engine bay electrical panel was complete, but covered with overspray. You can see the original ivory white in there though. The CDI didn't work and the SEV Marchal Black plastic voltage regulator was also toast.

The trials with the CDI have been described earlier, and Bob Ashlock restored an original for me. I had a spare Transpo VR floating around in my stash of stuff I bought for the restoration and that's what we used to get the car going. Works just fine. Still, it didn't look right, even though it's hidden behind the black plastic cover in the engine bay.

A couple of years ago I snagged an original tin can SEV Marchal VR, but really didn't want to trust it as a daily driver piece of equipment, even though it is adjustable and I replaced the batteries with Odyssey PC925s which are AGMs.

After doing some measurements, I realized that the VR sold through Pelican should fit in the tin can cover of the original. So I bought one.

Ground off some of the edges. Cut the plastic mounting tabs and painted them a cad plated colour. Rerouted the ground to be behind the painted tab. Popped the tin can on it and voila! A VR that works like a charm, but doesn't rub me the wrong way when I look at it. It's the one on the left of course. It's not perfect as the tabs are a bit different, but you do have to look pretty closely to tell its not the original.

Cool little project ...keeping the soul in your car
I did the same with my washer pump, kept and modified the old brackets so I could just put in a new pump. Also used the old mounting parts for the Hirschmann antenna you sold me.

I remember that antenna. My goodness, that was 8 years ago! Car had not come with a radio, so after buying both a radio and the perfect antenna I was convinced that you can’t really hear the radio and I decided to stay original.

Today’s project was to add a gated shifter to the car with no tell tale indications and completely reversible if someone so chose.

Could Ed or Ravi post a photo of where to apply the metal tape to prevent grease from leaking out of the CV joint?

Some adventures in eliminating battery drain and improving cold starts. https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...-in-engine-bay

Also in that thread, a lesson on the right 15 V setpoint regulator for a SEV Marchal alternator. It’s not what most people sell for our cars (that’s for Bosch). You need a VR made specially for alternators with isolation diodes.

Also replaced a seized blower motor (smoke gave me a heart attack last week). This was annoying because it was supposed to be a rebuilt unit I bought on fleabay last year. Of course any warranty was long over. And while I was at it, dug out the burned out bulb and wires tucked away above the heater control that indicates when the blower is on and replaced the bulb and put it into the proper top hole in the heater control. That was a contortionists nightmare. Having a head mounted LED lamp sure helped.

Removing the slop in the throttle pedal chain of rods and bellcranks and ballcups. https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...d-toeing/page2

Heel and toeing a bit better. Crossed 1700 miles since I got Hildegard back and decided to check rockers and valve clearances and gakets as I have a few oil weeps. Rockers are bone dry, valve clearance is on spec and new gaskets aren’t weeping except at the bottom of the right timing chain cover. Argh.

Not enought to ruin a 110 mile fall colour solo drive though! 13.8-13.9V at cruising rpm with all lights including fogs on and the heater blower. Having the right 15 V setpoint voltage regulator helps!

Not surprised by the valve clearances TBH. Engine was run in on the dyno for almost 30 hours and everything readjusted and retorqued before it went into the car. But a good learning experience for me to check all this stuff.

Valve cover gaskets torqued center out in 2 stages to 24.9 Nm.

Glorious weekend with Hildegard accumulating another 200 or so miles. Macan stayed on the lift, so this morning I made the decision to take Xander to work in Hildegard rather than the Macan. I think he enjoyed the short jaunt to work and the kids waiting for school buses certainly did a double take.
