More projects for the fall - or later in the pandemic. The oil lines to the front fender and the bypass thermostat were a NOS set I found in California 8 years ago. The oil cooler we settled on at the time was for a ‘74 as ‘73 ones were rare as hen’s teeth at the time and priced accordingly. In post #104 I put up a picture of one I was bidding on on eBay. I stopped at US$1200 and I think it went for US$1800. The ‘74 had the proper bends in it and connected right up to the oil lines, but it doesn’t have the right mounting brackets. I just used stainless steel tie wraps to attach it to the attachment points Robert had welded into the shell.

In the interests of originality and mechanical integrity, I priced out and purchased a Porsche Classic trombone and flex lines from my dealer. Fantastic price, way better than the usual sources, and about 2 weeks for delivery from Germany. Interestingly, they said they were having their best quarter ever....quarantine’s are good for some businesses I guess.

BTW, the Porsche Classic trombone is brass and painted black.

Existing cooler works just fine, so there is no hurry. Will wait for cooler weather and an oil change to do it.

And the '74 that is in there right now (which was 75 bucks).

Semi-assembled and looks like jewellery, but it strikes me I should fill this with oil, so I'll have to wait a bit to install. Robert filled with Valvoline VR1 20W-50, which happens to be what I ran in all my air cooled Triumph bikes.

400 miles this weekend. Couple more drips sorted I think. Enough that I can park on a friend’s driveway and not leave a spot.

Knees banging up against the wheel though when shifting my foot from one pedal to another. Need a steering wheel hub extender. Suggestions? Anything needed in addition to the extender, like a longer horn pin?

I got one from Aaron at Zuffenhaus years ago.

Not sure if Classico Wheels/Jeffrey Feldman has one but he does carry the 911R wheel.

The trombone is not a very efficient cooler, but if your ambient is under 80 it works ok. You don't need to fill with oil, once the thermostat opens it will fill immediately.

Keith sent me a note yesterday. They are still producing the steering hub spacers for early and later '74 ^ cars.

    Keith:

Are you guys still producing early and late hubs for the 911?

    Yes sir.

    Thank you,

given the level you have this car to now you should also consider hunting around for a genuine factory extended wheel

this is mine from my 73E. In 1973 they were only available with hard plastic rims BUT up to and including 1972 they were available in leather as well. I have a leather 72 one on my car that I picked up from a board member years ago and the "correct" but not as nice to use one in storage.

Yes you will need the longer horn pin for one.

Extended steering wheel was option on model year 72 in U.K. I know a two owner 72 S that has fitted extended wheel from new. Think it importer fitted extended wheel along with several other options like fitting headrests on the standard for U.K. market S Recaro Sports seats. Original invoice says “extended steering wheel” £11.

Thanks guys. The Zuffenhaus hubs only bolt up to a Momo wheel it turns out. He suggested Cornpanzer’s extension hub. Not sure if David is still making them. I see Sierra Madre carries a 30 mm extension in shiny aluminium. Jeffrey Feldman didn’t have such a thing either but suggested his 911R wheel which has the extended hub. Hugh may be right that I might try dig up an older one and keep the pristine one I have in the basement. There was a redone padded one for sale here not too long ago.

EDIT: That wheel was a padded 380 mm with Cornpanzer’s hub extension. Padding of course adds to the radius and gets clost to my 400 mm wheel, which kinda defeats the purpose. Will chase David (cornpanzer) down.
