    Oddballs, accidents, and character flaws

We know that Porsche used up the parts they had available and sometimes this has resulted in some cars with minor details a little different from others. Maybe Hans snuck an extra beer at lunch or a supplier was having trouble and an alternate had to be found.

Pictures please of things out of place which appear to be original but not quite right, I'll start:

Common sense would say that a bar was replaced but judging by the finish on the ends (not pictured) it's indistinguishable from the others, it does not seem to be a number 6 bar cut down and shaped to fit number 12 position.

    Over to you now.

Beer bottle caps have been known to show up under the sound deadening material. I understand it was pretty routine for factory employees to enjoy a malted beverage during a break. If you look closely at some factory photo's, you can see a bottle or two perched on the tooling equipment.

When I toured the Munich BMW factory in '72 I was surprised to see the beer (rather than soda) machines throughout the factory. And I was amazed watching fenders being stamped out on a huge press by a fellow who had a beer sitting on the press. He would take a swig between pulling out the newly made fender and loading the next sheet into the press. He had a rhythm going, but no arm straps to keep the press from crushing his arms if the beer clouded his timing.

I wonder if this is still SOP in German factories? Probably not, but maybe this was the secret to the reputation for German build quality of the past?

I think they still get beer on breaks. Probably not while working. It's no big deal over there due to the long history of it. They know how to enjoy responsibly.
