Need help getting a few details right in my 73 RS engine bay

I drove my car over to the EASY gathering in Emeryville last Saturday and had a great time hanging out with everyone. Hadn't been to one in years and I'd forgotten how much fun they are and how great it is to check out all the cars and scrounge around the warehouse for those hard-to-find parts. Hey, it's not used, just pre-patina'd!

Chris Roman was there and I had him take a look at my car. He has a superbly restored RS and was pointing out some of the little details that I should correct. On some he wasn't 100% sure so I'm looking for the collective wisdom of all of you. As always, I appreciate that there is often not one absolutely correct answer, as things change within the model year. One possible example is the fan housing strap; I think early serial numbers were black. Mine came yellow plated and single bolt when I bought the car in 1984. I've checked around for photos of other later series cars and they all appear to be the same as mine. But I'm not 100% sure. Oh, and the car is #1282.

    My questions are:

-Fan strap- single bolt, yellow plated correct?
-What are the correct stickers on the coil? I think originally there was just one below the clamp? Mine seems to have sticker overkill.
-Heater hose clamps. Mine are goldish regular type clamps. Not the Norma style. Chris thought they should be a Norma style.

And if you see anything else let me know, and thanks for the help!

    IMHO
Your only problem are the hose clamps. And of course the thermovalve but most have taken them off.

    Hi Jeff,

Your engine compartment looks very nice IMHO.

Your car is a May build so a single bolt strap. Correct, the coil originally didn't have the blue label. Does the relay cover have a wing nut holding it on?

    Jeff,
I agree with all above.... very nice engine bay

Also I'll second Brian's question about the wing nuts...

Also it's been my observation that the Shell oil sticker changed in about March from the 'yellow square' to the newer 'white rectangle.'
I believe it was designed for the wider cylindrical CIS air box....

    - My peeled and saved original sticker
    - My replacement

    Hope this helps

Thanks very much for the quick feedback!

Brian, the relay cover does have a wing nut (or wing screw; you can just make out the two ends in the photo). Also in the photo one side of the air filter intake cover is held on with a regular nut. This has already been replaced with a plastic wing nut. Oh, and I put the correct "squiggle" in the coil ground as well.

When the engine was rebuilt in 1995 I went with SSI heat exchangers which didn't have the connection for the thermovalve. I've rationalized that it's fine since it can't help airflow, was routinely removed anyway, and isn't in the "sports purpose" nature of the RS. The guy from SSI even claimed Porsche issued a technical bulletin at some point indicating that it could (should?) be removed. So mine is just sitting in storage.

    Chuck,
My Targa was May production and it came with the full yellow sticker, but I've seen lots of overlaps for equipment.

Agree with most all. Loose the blue sticker on the coil. Later production RSs had the wing nut on the panel cover and if you have a later production car the white shell sticker is probably the one. Here is #488 finished about 2 years ago. It had the two bolt plated strap. ( the naked valve covers got fixed!) Hose clamps are the old Norma style with a round head slotted drive....NOT hex head, yellow zinc. They're usually lying around on the floor at EASY!

Not sure about the coil bracket sticker for a ´73 engine. When was this introduced?

The pic in the 1972/73 brochure shows no coil bracket sticker:

I have both the '72 and the '73 brochures. This engine photo was used in both, unchanged. So, it had to be taken early in '72 for production/printing deadlines. The '73 brochure does have subtile changes due additional black trim on the '73 models...these changes were simply and crudely touched in the same '72 photos!
I would consider the brochures "helpful" references, but hardly archival. Period factory assembly line photos, yes. Original cars, yes. #488's engine sheet metal and decals came very original and funky...with both stickers. Konradsheim, pg 72, has a dyno room photo with an engine sporting only one coil decal, but he used generic brochure photos as well. So who knows when the photo was taken. His listing of production changes references the hood crest decal and Weltmeister decal changes, but no coil decal references. Given the fact that this was an early car your question is certainly valid. I have even had discussions with other "RS guys" about the orientation of the decal! I put it as I got it, both orientation and both decals. The fog of history and old cars! The game goes on.

I had seen the Carrera RS book dyno room photo without the sticker on the bracket, and I was almost ready to go that way. For now I've just removed the blue sticker and will leave the two others like 488 above. Thanks for the info!
